A technical possibility of satellite multi-channel digital TV broadcasting has been studied in the study group of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications. Subjective evaluation tests for digital coded pictures have been conducted to reveal the performance of present digital coding techniques. This paper describes the results of these tests in detail. The conclusions on multi-channel TV broadcasting are as follows (1) If the higher picture quality than those of NTSC studio standard pictures is required for the digital TV, no system using in these tests can meet this requirement. (2) If the higher picture quality than those of FM-NTSC pictures is required, there is a possibility of servicing three digital television programs using one channel of satellite broadcasting.

We have developed a compact light-controllable spotlight using a new heat-resistant light shutter, which contains a light scattering composite film of liquid crystal and polymer, and a 270W high-intensity metal halide lamp for TV-lighting techniques. The spotlight has advantages of high-speed response, high extinction ratio and good controllability. We have also demonstrated various lighting effects such as lightning and stroboscopic light by applying electric signals to the light shutter.

At the BARCELONA Olympics, NHK used two 2-piece style HDTV EFP systems for the first time in the world, each of which is a combination of a HDTV small CCD camera and a portable UNIHI cassette VTP with several small batteries. These systems covered 12 competitions -for example, starting point of marathon races, synchronized swimming, and JUDO. As a result, we could make our HDTV broadcast of Olympics more interesting.

This paper describes outline of Digital Color Corrector for HDTV that performs color correction of the Hi-Vision digital video signals in studio editing system. This Color Corrector controls G,B,R color balance (gain, pedestal, gamma), and also changes any specified color in picture to desired one. Digital processing can perform complex correction of HDTV signals without degradation of picture quality.
