An LCD backlight having an extremely simple structure has been developed by utilizing a flat discharge volume with insulated electrodes. A 5.6-in. diagonal discharge volume is a mere open space in which Hg and Ar are admitted. The thickness of the volume can be varied from device to device between 1 and 3 mm. Luminance uniformity was measured to be 93% without using a diffusion sheet. Luminance can be dimmed down to 2 % of the peak value by extending the pulse period.

We have already proposed a method to determine the elastic constant ratio K_<33>/K_<11> from a linear relationship between capacitance and reciprocal voltage of LC cell in the higher voltage range. In this method, it was found that a small error in determing the Freedricksz threshold voltage V_c induce a large error of K_<33>/K_<11>. In this paper, we propose a new method to determine V_c by simple curve fitting of capacitance-voltage curve in a low voltage region. Then, by using this V_c value, K_<33>/K_<11> can be accurately determined by the previously reported method mentioned above.

The mechanism of the liquid crystal molecule (5CB) alignment by the polarized UV irradiated polymer film has been examined by the spectroscopic method like UV/vis and IR. Consequencely it become clear that crosslinking of polyvinylcinnamate (PVCn) fairly depends on the temperature of the substrate at the time of the UV irradiation, especially the liquid crystal alignment is improved by the use of irradiating with UV light to PVCn through heating the substrate above Tg. Moreover it is assumed that the alignment of 5CB has two mechanisms. One is that 5CB aligns due to the res-idual side-chain which don't react below Tg, the other is that above Tg the cross-linked structure aligns it.

We developed the wide range horizontal deflection size control circuit using the PWM (Pulse Width Modulation). We used the PWM form in order to make small-sized circuit, to decrease power loss, to get the cost lowly. As a result, we took off the size coil, the relay, and the heat sink of the size control transistor, which were used in conventional circuit.

We have newly synthesized three diamine derivatives utilized as hole transport layer of organic thin film electroluminescent devices, in order to syudy the difference of characteristics between these derivatives and TPD. We could obtain devices by utilizing TPD2,TPD3 which are higher luminous efficiency than device utilizing TPD. In addition to, We could obtain TPD4 of which glass transition temperature is higher than that of TPD.

Flat panel display to use field emitter arrays (FEA) for electron source is called Field Emission Display (FED). In the present paper, we fabricated the FEA with focus electrode, and measured the emission current-voltage characteristics. We measured the energy distribution of the field emitted electrons by an ac retarding field method.

In order to remove the disadvantage of luminous efficiency, we proposed the barrier-electrode ac plasma displays (BE- PDPs). In this reseach, we improved the structure of BE-PDPs and applied sandblasting technology to establish fabrication processes for BE-PDPs. By the computer simulation of operation mechanisms and the anservation of light emitting region by streak camers, we clarified the characteristics of BE-PDPs.

Sputtered MgO protecting layer for ac-PDPs was measured secondary electron emission yield γ and aging characteristics of testing panel. AS a result, sputtered MgO by high substrate temperature and high argon gas pressure has a large secondary electron emission yield γ, and is excellent in point of low sustaining voltage.

For the purpose of investigating the characteristecs of secondary electron emission by ion from the protecting layer materials of plasma displays, we constrcted an experimental apparatus. The secondary electron emission characteristecs are discussed concerning the properties for stainless sheet and MgO film in this paper.

In an ac-PDP, it is necessary to shorten statistical time lag, t_s, and formative time lag, t_f of gas discharge because several micro second long pulses are used to control on/off switch of discharge cells. The time lags arc evaluated for a parallel plane ac discharge cell with He-Xe gas mixture. The results were in agreement with the feature of the Wijsman model, which could determine t_<sm>^<-1>(t_σ), i.e. priming intensity at a time, t_σ, elapsed from the primary discharge. The priming effect, of which t_<sm>^<-1>(tσ) decreases with increasing t_σ, is probably caused by metastable state Xe destruction of fast exponential decay, and by ion-electron recombination. Discharge characteristics caluculated with the priming effect, were compared with those of ac-PDPs.
