Projection TVs (PTVs) have been manufactured as home used displays with large screen. The development to achieve the thinner phosphor screen and the higher density of electron beam will realize the high resolution in projection tubes (PRTs). However, the life time and the luminous efficiency of many phosphors decreases greatly because these techniques make the excitation density increase. Especially, ZnS : Ag phosphors for the only material of blue emission phosphors in PRTs have a large problem of the luminous saturation. We measured the glow curves of ZnS : Ag phosphors accurately and evaluated the trap states. The observed glow curves have been analyzed by peak separation technique. The trap state associated with Al (coactivator) has the peak temperature at 144K. For the trap state associated with Al, the thermal energies were estimated to be 0.28eV in cubic-ZnS phosphors and 0.31eV in hexagonal-ZnS phosphors.

It is very important to improve blue luminescence properties for the development of full color TFEL displays. Recently, Ce^<3+> doped SrS thin films are widely used as blue-green emitting phosphor layer, but the further improvement of luminescence properties is required. In this paper, we used CeN as luminescent centers instead of CeCl_3 and evaluated the properties of SrS : Ce thin films.

We fabricated a red emissive organic EL device utilizing an Alq3 layer doped with Rhodamine 101. Red color emission showed the chromaticity (x=0.62,y=0.35). The red emission mechanism was discussed in the device by examining the excitation wavelength of Rhodamine 101 and the emission wavelength of Alq3,and V-I characteristics.

High luminance, High luminous efficiency and long life time Cold Cathode Fluorecsent Lump has been developed. This lump has hybrid type Cathode, so long life time is achieved because of its low spattering yield of cathode materials and high luminous efficiency is achieved because of its low cathode fall voltage. We applied this fluorecsent lump to large size and very slim backlighting for POP and LCD.

Considering the advances of medical imaging technology, display technology, computer, network and database technology etc, development of new clinical environments and new methods are expected for image diagnosis. For example, conventional diagnosis has been executed on film based images, but recently display technology has new contribution to clinical use. Here, we describe a new image diagnosis method for lung cancer.

A photo-alignment method is applied to orient ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs), and the alignment properties of the FLCs are studied comparing with those of FLCs aligned by a rubbing method. The results show higher contrast of photo-aligned FLCs than that of a rubber FLC cell due to the better alignment uniformity.

As the first step of LCD monitor market, Hosiden corporation has developed 14.5" XGA color TFT-LCD module. This product is for Monitor use and has special features of Pixel number=1024x (3) x768,64 Gray Level, 260,000 colors, Contrast=more than 150 : 1 and Brightness=more than 200 cd/m^2. It has reached the mass-production already and meet the requirement of large size monitor panel and which is noticed as the key to find the further LCD development.

The Active Matrix VFDs (Vaccum Fluoresent Displays) has been developed with the unique phospher-on-chip method. Instead of the conventional multiplex with grid scanning, this AMVFD employs semiconductor chips for matrix addressing and for data storage. As a light source, phosphor is coated on the dotmatrix anodes formed on the surface of chip. To obtain better productivity and lower cost, we employed the existing CMOS technology and the tiling method with using economical smaller size chips. Specially this AMVFD can be manufactured by the existing VFD process for commercial production. This AMVFD features following advantages ; High brightness with low voltage static drive, lower power consumption and lower switching noise, space reduction and simple interfacing with incorporated memory and peripheral functions.

A new ionplating (URT-IP) process using an unique plasma beam control system for gradient-pressure type plasma source that generate highly dense are plasma, which enables uniformly coating in large area. This technique has a powerful potential of high speed deposition of a variety of thin film materials. Particularly attractive attention is focused on the coating of transparent electrically conductive tin-doped indium oxide (ITO) films for flat panel displays (FPD). The prototype machine has demonstrated the attractive data, lower resistivity, lower substrate temperature and higher deposition rate compared to sputtering process, which has proved the competitiveness of the process in FPD applications. The first machine for commercial use in 1997 is intended to be the starter of replacing conventional machines based on sputtering system.

Color PDPs utilize the pulse-number-modulation-within-a-field technique for expressing gray levels. When moving images are displayed on the PDPs, disturbances of gray levels and colors are often observed. The equalizing-pulse technique adds (or subtracts) an extra light-emission to an original signal to compensate for the lack of emission. The technique, however, is not adequate for images moving at fast speeds. In this paper a new technique is introduced in which the equalizing pulses are weighed according to the speed of an image motion. The technique is applicable to images moving at any speed in any direction.
