Fairclough states that genres structure texts in specific ways. Using Fairclough’s theory and
Fowler’s ideas, I examined the relationship between genre, discourses, and style in a column and an
editorial in the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Japan’s leading economic newspaper.
The examination found that genre, discourses, and style were of a similar structure in each text
but differed in structure when comparing one text with the other. The results support Fairclough’s
theory that genres structure texts in specific ways.
My analysis also found the column and editorial to have opposite characteristics with regard to
features mentioned by Fowler, such as use of 1)emotive vocabularies 2)modalities 3)generic
statements, and 4)argumentation.
