In Clark (1974), it is proposed that the deictic verbs come and go have metaphorical usages, come referring to a normal state and go referring to a non-normal state respectively. Some criticalremarks, however, have been made on Clark's proposal. In this paper, I will investigate the validityof these critical remarks and introduce a hypothesis made by Ueno (1995). It will be suggestedthat Ueno (1995)is proposing a plausible solution to the seemingly defective points of Clark'sproposal.

The present paper reports the results of fi eld surveys of welfare facilities for children and the Child Psychiatry Hospital in Finland to discuss diff erences in welfare and psychiatric practices implemented for children in Japan and Finland. In interviews, facility staff stated that children's welfare institutions in Finland place emphasis on a therapeutic style of daily life and individual children are respected. The highest priority is placed on children's "lives" even when they require psychological care or psychiatric treatment. It is important for psychological care professionals to fully utilize what they have learned in Finland and provide children with support to improve their lives based on a comprehensive care system implemented by welfare facilities.

This paper examines the phenomenon of Enjo-Kosai which became a popular catchword in Japan in the late 90s and early part of the 21st century. Enjo-Kosai has been translated into English as `compensated dating' and `schoolgirl prostitution.' Firstly, the question of what exactly enjo-kosai is will be answered. Then moral and social issues behind the phenomenon will be discussed. The role of women and pornography in Japanese society will then be analysed before looking at the role played by the mass media and innovations in technology.
