Ubiquinone 10 (UQ_<10>) contents in liver and serum of patients with liver diseases were examined by using a high-performance liquid chromatography according to Abe and Katsui, and the following results were obtained. 1) UQ_<10> content of hepatic cells in 4 cases having more severe than intermediate degree of degeneration and necrosis was 92.4±22.4 μg/g wet weight, which was significantly lower than 130.2±14.5 μg/g wet weight in 5 cases having no liver injury. 2) Serum UQ_<10> Content in 23 patients with liver cirrhosis was 0.42±0.14 μg/ml, which was significantly lower than those in patients with other liver diseases (acute hepatitis: 0.76±0.33, chronic hepatitis: 0.74±0.26, hepatoma: 0.64±0.43) and healthy individuals (0.68±0.15). 3) Serum UQ_<10> content in 6 patients with acute hepatitis was low at the clinically extreme stage of illness and tended to increase toward the recovering stage. 4) A significant correlation was found between the serum total cholesterol level and the serum UQ_<10> content (r=0.443, n=58).
