Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) has numerous metabolic functions that are largely dependent on its potent reducing properties. Vitamin C is conveyed from extracellular fluids into the cytoplasm by the sodium-dependent vitamin C transporters: SVCT1 (SLC23A1) and SVCT2 (SLC23A2), both of which are twelve-transmembrane proteins. Recent studies revealed the effect of SVCTs' gene polymorphisms on health and the risk of preterm birth and diseases. However, there is little information about the vitamin C transporters which discharge vitamin C present in the cytoplasm into extracellular fluids. In this paper, we review the present and future of vitamin C transporter research.

Zinc is an essential trace element that plays a pivotal role as a structural, catalytic, and signaling component within protein functions. Adequate intake of zinc from daily diets is indispensable for maintaining health. However, recent studies have revealed that people, especially women and elders, with marginal zinc deficiency and a suboptimal zinc status, which causes taste dysfunction and immune system dysfunction, are often found even in industrialized countries. Severe zinc deficiency causes a broad range of defects such as alopecia, diarrhea, and skin lesions. Thus, much attention should be paid to zinc deficiency in daily life. In this review, zinc deficiency is briefly overviewed from the standpoint of zinc physiology, focusing on the physiological functions of zinc transporters. Moreover, mutations in zinc transporters, which are implicated in inherited zinc deficiency, are discussed. The study of these zinc transporters is currently of great clinical interest.

A 29C>T polymorphism of the transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1) gene is reported to be associated with genetic susceptibility to both osteoporosis and vertebral fracture. In the present study, the prevalence of vertebral fracture was found to be increased according to the rank order of the TGF-β1 genotypes CC<CT<TT in 168 postmenopausal patients with osteoporosis. It was also found that total, leg, and appendicular fat-free mass as well as relative skeletal muscle index were significantly lower in subjects with CT+TT genotypes than in subjects with CC genotype in 479 community-dwelling adults in Tokyo Metropolis who consisted of 143 men and 336 women. These data suggest that T allele of the 29C>T polymorphism in the TGF-β1 gene might be a risk factor of sarcopenia in Japanese population. Therefore, determination of the TGF-β1 genotype would offer clinicians a clue to identify individuals with a high-risk for vertebral fragility fracture among patients with postmenopausal osteoporosis.
