    Cyhalofop butyl, [R-(+)-n-butyl-2-(4-(2-fluoro-4-cyanophenoxy) phenoxy) propionate] is a selective rice graminicide which can control up to the 5-6 leaf stage of Echinochloa crus-galli by foliar application. Japanese agricultural practice requires development of a granule formulation of cyhalofop butyl. In addition to this granule formulation which is applied to paddy water at about the 3 leaf stage, an EW (emulsion, oil in water) formulation has been intensively studied for foliar application at the late stage, i. e., the 5 leaf stage, as a “rescue” treatment. The herbicidal activity of cyhalofop butyl EW formulation equals the cyhalofop butyl EC (emulsifiable concentrate) formulation, and can control the 5-6 leaf stage of this plant at 240g ai/ha. To obtain stable efficacy, a 500-1000l/ha spray solution of cyhalofop butyl EW formulation is recommended. The results obtained suggest that cyhalofop butyl EW formulation is a promising rice herbicide by which to control the late leaf stage of Echinochloa crus-galli in terms of high biological activity and crop safety.

    To ascertain the most effective use of Xanthomonas campestris pv. poae (JT-P482) treatment for the control of annual bluegrass (Poa annua L.), pot-experiments in the greenhouse and in the field were conducted from 1993 to 1994. JT-P482 appeared to have merit as a management tool for the reduction of annual bluegrass growth, tiller numbers and seed production. Greenhouse experiments indicated that a 20°C/15°C day/night temperature regime enabled JT-P482 to effectively produce heavy wilting or plant death at cell concentrations higher than 108cfu/ml. This effectiveness continued for 3 months after the initial treatment. In the field pot experiments, applications of JT-P482 in early winter alone (December 1) and in spring alone (April 10), at cell concentrations of 108 and 109cfu/ml were very effective in suppressing seed production (77-85% and 84-88%, respectively). Moreover treatments administered in early winter and again in spring were found to significantly suppress (over about 85%) annual bluegrass seed production even at 107cfu/ml concentrations. However, of all concentrations (106 to 109cfu/ml), 108 and 109cfu/ml were most effective in suppressing seed production (about 94%). If seed suppression of 85% or more is considered to be acceptable for practical purposes, 109cfu/ml concentration in the early winter treatment, 108 and 109cfu/ml concentrations in the spring treatment, and concentrations higher than 107cfu/ml in repeated treatments can be highly effective.

    Pinellia ternata (Thunb.) Breit. is an Araceae perennial weed and reproduces by seeds, bulbils produced on both lamina joints and petioles, and cormlets. The relationship between its reproductive mode and corm weight was investigated.
    In April, 1992, two hundred fifty corms were sampled in a flower garden, weighed, planted individually in 11cm diameter ×10cm depth pots filled with soil from a vegetable field and dug up in October, 1992. The number of leaves expanded, bulbils and scapes formed were recorded over time. Weight of each bulbil was measured individually.
    Four different leaf types were produced in order as the plant grew, representing separate growth stages. These were the cordate, auriculate, tripartite and ternately compound leaf stages. Individuals in the cordate leaf stage seldom produced reproductive organs. Only a few individuals in the auriculate leaf stage produced bulbils on petioles, while almost all of the individuals in the tripartite leaf stage did so. All individuals in the ternately compound leaf stage produced bulbils on both lamina joints and petioles. Flowering plants always had ternately compound leaves and corm fresh weight heavier than 0.79g. Number of leaves expanded, bulbils produced, and bulbil weight were highly related to corm weight. Reproduction of this weed was inferred to be closely dependent on corm weight.
