JOURNAL FREE ACCESSDormancy, germination temperature and light requirement of broomsedge (Andropogon verginicus L.) seeds collected from the turf fields of the Agricultural Experimental Farm Station of Utsunomiya University in Moka City, Tochigi Pref. were examined by a petridish test. The results were summarized as follows: i) Broomsedge seeds pre-dispersed from mother plants exhibited a dormancy during Oct. to Dec. in 2003. However, the dormancy was broken under the low temperature (5°C) and water saturated conditions, and became shallow as the season became late, ii) minimum, maximum and optimum germination temperatures of the seeds were 15-20°C, 40-45°C and 30-35°C, respectively, and the seeds were induced into a environmental dormancy under the low temperature conditions (<15°C), and iii) the seeds did not require the light for germination.View full abstractDownload PDF (587K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe purpose of these experiments was to determine the relationship between that the seed coat colors, the position effects, the seed shapes, the dehiscence grades of the capsules and the seed coat crack of Iris pseudacorus and the germination characteristics of seeds that come into emergence in autumn. In the seeds which were floating the water surface, compared with the brown seed and black seed, the white seed had a little deep dormancy. The differences of dormancy depending on a position effect, a seed shape, and differences resulting from a dehiscent time were little, so it was considered that the relevance with autumn emergence is low. Dormancy of the seed remaining in dehiscence capsules became deeper under airdried storage of the room temperature conditions, and the breaking of dormancy was enhanced by 5°C wetstorage. However, at a field test, there was no correlation between the rate of the emergence and the dehiscence grades of the capsules. The emergences mainly occurred in the next spring after seed ripening, but some of seeds germinated at the rate of 2-16% in the autumn of the ripened year. The seed in which seed coat cracked germinated earlier, and it was shown that their cumulative germination percentage was high even under 30°C constant conditions. Therefore, it was thought that the seed in which seed coat cracked had contributed to the autumn emergence greatly.View full abstractDownload PDF (1024K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSWe evaluated the weed control efficacy of several cultural systems comprising winter barley as a cover crop, narrow-row, band application of herbicide, and/or mechanical mowing in no-tillage soybean. A two-year field study was conducted for evaluation. Efficacy of winter barley for weed suppression was much greater than that of the other practices. The soybean yield was also higher in the winter barley systems than in the single-crop systems. Greatest weed suppression and the highest soybean yield were attained in the system comprising winter barley, band application of herbicide, and mechanical weeding. The combination of winter barley and narrow-row soybean provided high soybean yield and appreciable weed suppression despite a lack of herbicide application and mechanical mowing.View full abstractDownload PDF (887K) -
