  • The survival and recovery ability of Plantago asiatica L. after mowing at the paddy rice field levee

    Vegetation survey and cultivation experiments were conducted to investigate recovery and survival ability of Plantago asiatica for shoot removal by mowing at the paddy rice field levees. At four paddy rice field levees in Atsugi, Kanagawa Pref., populations of P. asiatica were mainly comprised of overwintering plants. Plant density of P. asiatica was maintained almost less than 300/m2 throughout year, however, temporally increased with seedling emergence from June to August. Prematured inflorescences were totally removed by each mowing during summer and seed shattering occurred after final mowing in November. Performance of un-cut plants which sowed in the previous September, following April and June were compared to the cut plants with cut in frequency of the paddy rice field levee. As results, overwintering plants sowed in the previous September developed a similar number of leaves to the un-cut plants. However, they slightly reduced their shoot and root dry matter weight compared to the un-cut plants. On the other hand, plants sowed in April and July markedly decreased their leaf number as well as dry weight of shoot and root in comparison with un-cut plants. In addition, though the plants sowed in the previous September were removed in next June, seeds in premature capsules of those plants exhibited high germination percentage (88%). It became clear that seed of P. asiatica could germinate before shattering and regrowth ability after shoot removal of overwintered plants were high. These factors are considered to confer on P. asiatica to persist in paddy field levees.
