A survey was made of Noctuid moth larvae found in bores of bamboo shoots of both wild and cultivated (now deserted) species growing in southwestern Japan. A total of 4,026 shoots belonging to 13 species were examined, from which over 300 larvae were collected. They were reared at 20℃ and 15℃, and the resulting moths were identified. Phyllostachys heterocycla produced only one example, being a female moth; from P. nigra var. heronis, one female and two males, and from P. bambusoides two pairs of moths emerged. These eight examples were identified as Bambusiphila vulgaris. The above-mentioned three bamboo species had hosted larvae identical with that of Bambusiphila vulgaris. Two females came from Pleioblastus linearis, and their morphology was roughly similar to that of Atrachea miyakensis; but their uniquecolored wing patterns and spots suggest the possibility that they either belong to a new species or to an undescribed subspecies of Atrachea miyakensis and/or related species. Finally, a single female of Sapporia repetita emerged from Sasa kurilensis, which proved to be the first known hostplant of this moth. The high mortality of the reared Noctuid moth larvae and pupae is not ascribable to parasites such as wasps and flies, but to other unknown negative factors.
