    The foundation of the National Institute of Health, which is now 20 years' old, dates back to May 21, 1947. The following is the history of those past 20 years with special emphasis on the circumstances under which the Institute was founded and the development that followed. Any advice or suggestion from the readers to help the Institute improve itself will be highly appreciated.

    1. Acid phosphatase activity of the mouse lungs was elevated in response to tuberculous infection. This elevation was accelerated when the mice had been immunized with BCG.
    2. “In vivo grown tubercle bacilli” (H37RvL) were separated and purified mechanically from the lungs of moribund mice which had been infected intravenously with 1 mg of H37Rv grown on Sauton medium.
    3. The pH activity curve of acid phosphatase of H37RvL was different from that of Sauton H37Rv, taking the pattern similar to the lung tissue.
    4. Several evidences were presented to indicate that this enzyme activity of H37RvL was due to the presence of host-originated acid phosphatase bound on the surface of the bacilli.
    5. In addition, it was admitted that acid phosphatase activity peculiar to Sauton H37Rv bacilli was lost or masked during their stay in the mouse lungs.
    6. The intensity of acid phosphatase activity of H37RvL was not affected essentially by treatment with trypsin or Triton X-100, but was completely abolished by NaOH (4%) treatment without loss of bacillary viability.
    7. After incubation at 37 C with lung tissue extract or “lysosomal fraction”, Sauton H37Rv bacilli acquired totally or partially the same pattern of acid phosphatase activity as H37RvL.
    8. The enzyme activity of H37RvL was interpreted as the result of lysosomeparasite interaction within phagocytes, and discussion is made referring to the recent informations concerning phagocytosis.

    “In vivo grown tubercle bacilli” (H37RvL) were separated and purified mechanically from the lungs of moribund mice which had been infected intravenously with 1 mg of H37Rv virulent tubercle bacilli grown on Sauton liquid medium. A striking difference was found in resistance to NaOH treatment between H37RvL and H37Rv. For instance, incubation at 37 C in 5% NaOH for 4 hr reduced viable counts of H37Rv suspension nearly to one-hundredth, but the same condition did not affect the viability of H37RvL at all. An increase in resistance to NaOH was also observed when H37Rv bacilli had been pretreated with normal mouse lung extract. An explanation was presented that the NaOH resistance of H37RvL bacilli is due to possible presence of a protective layer on the bacillary surface which is composed of substances originated from host tissues or cells. Thus, the high NaOH resistance of H37RvL, together with the observation reported in the preceding paper that host-originated acid phosphatase is present on the surface of H37RvL bacilli, will represent one aspect of the host-parasite interaction in tuberculous infection.

    Adrenal ascorbic acid content regarded as an indication of adrenocortical activity was determined in order to find if there is any relationship between Shigella infection and the adrenocortical function in cynomolgus monkeys that were suffering either naturally or experimentally from bacillary dysentery.
    In the monkeys which died from natural dysentery, the average adrenal ascorbic acid content was about 60% lower than that in control healthy animals. In experimentally dysentery-infected monkeys sacrificed 3-4 days after oral administration of Shigella flexneri 2 a, namely at the peak of disease, the average adrenal ascorbic acid content decreased to about 55% of the normal control, and the content returned to its normal value 6-8 days after the infection coinciding with the ensuing of convalescence in apparent symptomatology of experimental dysentery.
    The average liver ascorbic acid level was shown to rise markedly above the healthy control 3-4 days after the experimental infection with Shigella flexneri 2 a, whereas the level was almost equal to that of control monkeys 6-8 days and 13-15 days after the infection.
    These results seem to prompt further studies to scrutinize the possible involvement of adrenocortical function in the course of Shigella infection in cynomolgus monkeys.

    The morphology of Cercaria longissima Faust, 1924 were studied and a revision of description of its morphology regarding the sensory organs and the excretory system was presented. This cercaria is provided with several sensory organs around the mouth and sensory hairs on the lateral side of the body as well as on the tail. The flame cell pattern is expressed as 2x [(2+2) + (2+2+ [2] ) ] .
