Several attempts were made to demonstrate the presence of ABO blood group substances on the red blood cells (RBC) of the cynomolgus monkey. Neither the direct hemagglutination test nor the antibody absorption test was successful in detecting these substances from whole RBC, the stromata or the butanol extracts of RBC. By the heat elution of antibodies, however, the presence of ABH substances was demonstrated on RBC of every phenotype without fail. In all cases, there was a reciprocal relationship between the ABH substances of RBC and of saliva and the anti-A and anti-B antibodies in serum, being in good agreement with Landsteiner's rule. Accordingly, it can be concluded that a small amount of ABH substances must be present on RBC of the cynomolgus monkey.

Some biological properties of Murayama virus, a new paramyxovirus, were studied. The virus grew well in primary monkey kidney cells as well as embryonated eggs, while the virus yields in primary chick embryo and BHK-21 cells were much lower. The infected BHK-21 cells formed large syncytia and showed typical hemadsorption, but did not produce any detectable amount of hemagglutinin in the culture fluid. The virus yields were very low in Vero, LLC-MK2 and MDCK cells at first passages. The addition of trypsin to the medium enhanced virus growth in Vero and LLC-MK2 but not in MDCK cells. Cell fusion activity of the virus was observed in Molt-4 cells. Hemolytic activity was enhanced by freeze-thawing.
Several species of mammals and birds were susceptible to experimental infections with the virus as evidenced by seroconversion and positive virus isolation without showing any clinical signs.

Immune response of man to tetanus and diphtheria-tetanus combined toxoids with different compositions was investigated, with special reference to the long-term immunity. Adsorbed tetanus toxoid with a potency of about 25 IU per human dose endowed a long-lasting immunity sufficient to prevent tetanus to the vaccinees of various age groups, when administered in two doses, followed by a booster injection.
Two doses of adsorbed diphtheria-tetanus combined toxoid with potencies of about 20 IU per dose for both components were sufficient to give immunity in infants against diphtheria and tetanus. However, a booster injection should be given within a year to endow a long-lasting immunity.
In the case of booster immunization of children with a complete history of immunization against diphtheria and tetanus, a potent long-term immunity was endowed by a single injection of diphtheria-tetanus combined toxoid (plain) with 1 and 3.5 IU per dose, for diphtheria and tetanus components, respectively.

Sera of 111 mother/cord pairs were tested for IgG and IgM antibodies to Rickettsia tsutsugamushi. Thirty-two (29%) of the mothers had positive IgG titers that indicated previous infections. Evidence of fetal infection was not found, since IgM antibodies were not detected in corresponding cord sera.
