An increasing number of papers concerning polymer-anchored reagents and catalysts have been appeared during the past decade due to the specific advantages for organic synthesis.
This article describes characteristic features of insoluble resins as supports, reagents or catalysts; this includes the high-dilution or pseudodilution effect, stabilization of reagents and catalysts, site-site isolations, and site-site interactions. Subsequently, applications to organic reactions of these reagents, such as asymmetric synthesis on polymer backbone, cyclization reaction, capture of reactive intermediates, and phase-transfer reactions are also included. Merits and limitations using polymeric reagents and catalysts are discussed.

Chemical characteristics of cyclopropyl derivatives are classified and organic syntheses with practical utilization of these characteristics are reviewed. The classification involves : (1) additions of X-Y to a strained cyclopropyl sigma bond with ring cleavage; (2) additions of a nucleophile to activated cyclopropyl derivatives; (3) isomerizations of cyclopropyl cations, anions, and radicals to allylic species; (4) isomerizations of cyclopropylmethyl cations, anions, and radicals to either cyclobutyl or 3-butenyl species; (5) allenes from cyclopropylidenes and cyclopentadienes from 2-vinylcyclopropylidenes; (6) rearrangement of cyclopropylcarbenes to cyclobutenes; (7) reactions involving homolytic cleavage of a cyclopropane sigma bond; (8) vinylcyclopropane-cyclopentene rearrangement; (9) cis-1, 2-divinylcyclopropane-cyclohepta-1, 4-diene rearrangement and homo-1, 5-hydrogen migration; (10) homolyses of cyclopropene yielding vinylcarbenes ; (11) cycloadditions of some specifically activated olefins to cyclopropane derivatives; and (12) reactions of cyclopropene derivatives followed by ring cleavage of the resultant three-membered ring compounds.

Many useful acylation reactions including carbonylation have been improved in yield, reaction condition and manipulation by using 1-acylimidazole. In this review important synthetic applications of 1-acylimidazole after Staab's review in 1962 are described.

A general synthetic strategy to ansa-macrocyclic lactam, maytansinoid, is described via a common intermediate for maytansine, maytansinol, maysine and N-methylmaysenine. The key reactions are focused on the successful stereochemical control by diastereoselective asymmetric induction involving heteroconjugate addition, epoxidation, aldol reaction etc. The principle was mainly based on chelational and conformational control in acyclic system, and all of the seven asymmetric centers of maytansinol has been introduced before closing 19-membered lactam ring.

The discoveries of thienamycin and related compounds, potent and broad spectrum β-lactam antibiotics, have led to interest in the synthesis of compounds with a 1-carbapenem and 1-carbapenam ring system. Advances in the syntheses and synthetic approaches of 1-carbapenems and 1-carbapenams, which have been published from June 1980 to August 1982, are reviewed according to the synthetic methodology of these novel ring systems.

A 4, 5-unsubstituted 2-oxazolone moiety has proved of much synthetic potential as an excellent leaving group in carboxy-activating processes, in contrast with the 2-oxazolidinones. These findings led to the development of new versatile reagents, diphenyl 2-oxo-3-oxazolinylphosphonate [DPPOx] and 3-acyl- and 3-alkoxycarbonyl-2-oxazolones as well as their homo- and copolymers reactive enough to serve as highly chemo- and regioselective acylating agents. The DPPOx provides one-step and high-yield routes to 3-acyloxazolides, peptides, β-lactams, thiol esters and esters from a wide variety of carboxylic acids.
Scope and advantages of these “ready-to-use” type reagents' newly introduced are discussed from a preparative point of view.

New class of copolyimines were synthesized by low temperature polymerization of phthalaldehyde with 4, 4'-methylenedianiline using m-cresol as a solvent. The copolyimines obtained by monomer mixture (ratios of isophthalaldehyde/terephthaladehyde : 9/1 to 6/4) were found to have favourable film forming property. The film properties as high temperature insulating material are discussed.
