Several kinds of
N-substituted amide compounds, derived from malonic acid, glutaric acid, amino acids etc. have been prepared and their properties have been investigated. It has been found that
N, N'-di (8-quinolyl) malonamide derivatives are highly selective extractants for Cu (II) ion among heavy metals from the nearly neutral pH range of aqueous solution. Their extractability largely depends on the structure of substituents. When 1-naphthyl group was substituted for 8-quinolyl group, these malonamide derivatives could exhibit the clathrate-type inclusion phenomenon with organic molecules like benzene, cyclohexane, etc. Glutaramide derivatives having two 8-quinolyl groups were found to be available as highly Cu (II)-selective carrier for the transport through liquid membranes, although their extractability was very low compared with that of malonamide derivatives. Furthermore, selective ionophores for heavy metal ions based on malonamide and oligoamide derivatives of amino acids, 2, 6-dicarbamoyl-pyridine and 2, 9-dicarbamoyl-1, 10-phenanthroline have been synthesized, and their functions have been investigated.
