Small ponds and wells on Hegura-jima, an isolated islet on the Sea of Japan 48 km distant from the northern end of the Noto Peninsula were surveyed. The inland waters tested are characterized by having relatively high salinities. The water of two ponds is in mesohaline condition. The plankton of these ponds differs greatly. The larger one is dominated by a rotifer
Pedalia fennica and a conchostaracan
Heterocypris anomala ?, while the smaller one supports an abundant population of
Brachionus plicatilis.
