    Semantic disambiguation is a difficult problem in natural language analysis. The meaning of words is ambiguous because it cannot be uniquely determined unless information of other words in the sentence is obtained. A possible strategy for semantic disambiguation is to determine the meaning of words at the end of the sentence. This strategy might cause combinatorial explosion of the number of possible meanings, if the sentence is long. So we think it is impracticable for a system to determine the meaning of words from a number of candidates after it has finished reading the whole sentence. A desirable strategy for semantic disambiguation is to accumurate information obtained during the analysis process of a sentence and disambiguate the meaning incrementally by using the information. In this paper, we propose such a computational model of natural language analysis, called incremental disambiguation model. In our model we introduce indeterminates which represent semantic ambiguity of words. Indeterminates enable underdetermined meaning of words to be incrementally determined by information obtained later. Primitive operation of the semantic disambiguation is realized by extended unification on indeterminates. Information used for disambiguation is considered to be constraints which restrict the meaning of words. Our model has the following features : analysing a sentence from left to right without any backtracking ; disambiguating the meaning incrementally by using constraints obtained during the analysis process. So it is clear that our computational model agree with constraint programming paradigm. Our computational model is regarded as an implementation of constraint programming by extending logic programming language Prolog.

    Beginning with the etymological observation that the Arabic word tajir(un) “trader” is derived from the Aramaic taggara having the same meaning, I proceeded to the Accadian word tamkaru, which should be the original word of the above mentioned two words. Tamkaru is proved not to be a Sumerian word but rather is conjectured to be a derivative of a Semitic root *m-k-r, as A. Salonen maintains. However, I wish to add some reservation to this etymology, because its linguistic element (i. e. Acc. -karu/Sum. -qar/gar) has some similarity with the Hebrew gar/ger, Ugar. gr “foreigner, foreign resident”, and even with kar discussed below.
    On the other hand, the Accadian word karu(m). known as a special term for “Trade Market/Colony” especially from the Cappadocian Documents of the Old Assyrian Period, means “bank, dike, harbor” as a common Accadian word found, for example, in the Hammurabian Code, written by the Sumerian ideogram KAR, and supposed to be a derivative of the Sumerian word kar(a) having the same meaning.
    Trying to seek the linguistic affiliation of this word, namely Sum. kar(a), in the frame of the “Ubaidian Civilsation” and its “Dravidian Supposition”, I took, for my further study, the statent of A. L. Oppenheim that “the karu, the harbor of the city, a section outside of the town proper” as a meaningful suggestion. Consequently, I thought, as Sum, uru “city” is sometimes compared with the Dravidian *uru “village, city”, this “harbor”, Snm. kar(a), would be found, if the “Dravidian Supposition” is correct, in the Dravidian vocabularies as a correlate part of a cultural set of the Pre-Sumer Civilization.
    I found, after all, that Modern Dravidian languages have many such words, from which the supposed form *kar(a/e) “bank, dike” could be extracted.
    I added, as a supplement, to this short report some statements on the similarity of the said karu(m) with the so-called “karimi”, the Trade Community of much later centuries of the same area, of which some evidence was found among the Cairo Geniza Documents. This “karimi” has been supposed to be a Tamil, that is, a Dravidian word (Goitein, Basham) and on the other hand both had considerably similar functions (M. Rodinson).

    The phenomenon that phonemes in human speech carry certain images in themselves is called “phonetic symbolism”. There have been numerous studies concerning what kind of images (e.g. size, shape, and gravity) are associated with what kind of phonemes. However, human cognition is not as simple as something to be measured with the scales that are miscellaneously gathered. In order to grasp the holistic idea of the phonetic symbolism, this study investigates the possibility of applying Semantic Differential technique in measuring the images associated with phonemes. Evaluation, Potency, and Activity, which have been the three factors repeatedly found in literature as dimensions of human emotions are used. As a result, whether or not statistical differences are indicated among groups of phonemes is found to vary, depending on from which dimension the images are derived. Thus, the three-factor theory of Semantic Differential is proved applicable to the measurement of phonetic symbolism.

    Semantic disambiguation is a difficult problem in natural language analysis. A better strategy for semantic disambiguation is to accumulate constraints obtained during the analytical process of a sentence, and disambiguate as early as possible the meaning incrementally using the constraints. We propose such a computational model of natural language analysis, and call it the 'incremental disambiguation model.' The semantic disambiguation process can be equated with the downward traversal of a discrimination network. However, the discrimination network has a problem in that it cannot be traversed unless constraints are entered in an a priori-fixed order. In general, the order in which constraints are obtained cannot be a priori fixed, so it is not always possible to traverse the network downward during the analytical process. In this paper, we propose a method which can traverse the discrimination network according to the order in which constraints are obtained incrementally during the analytical process. This order is independent of the a priori-fixed order of the network.

    ニュースを報道する新聞社や放送局では,分類表により,情報を蓄積し検索してきたが,新しい問題,境界領域の問題など,従来の分類表ではうまく分類できないという問題が生じている。中日新聞では分類から離れて,シソーラスによる情報検索システムを作成することになった。以下,中日新聞で作成されたニュース・シソーラスの作成過程,シソーラスの構成,シソーラスの管理について述べた。このシソーラスは新聞索引集に収録された18万件の抄録を検討し用語を選定した。選定に際しては他社の索引誌も参照した。語数は約3,350語であり,「を見よ参照」「をも見よ参照」「を見よあり参照」「をも見よあり参照」の指示が表示されている。
