The recently developed technique of molecular beamepitaxy makes it feasible togrow multilayer structures with thickness control of a few angstroms. This opens thepossibility for a new generation of optical devices based on propagation through and reflection from periodic layered media.
In my talk I will describe the theoretical tools developed for this purpose. The concepts of Bloch waves and energy gaps for optical propagation will be described. New optical phenemena and devices which are predicted in such structure will be considered.
