At the end of the 19th Century there was a rich associational culture among the working class in Britain. The Co-operative Societies were one such association. The Co-operative movement was started by the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers' Society (established in 1844) to implement Owenite ideals, and put emphasis upon education for their members.

This paper attempts to reveal the process of the development of co-operative education with the Co-operative Union and Oxford University Extension from the 1880s to the 1890s, analyse the debate about co-operative education, and clarify the educational work planed and carried out by them.

After the Foster Act of 1870, elementary education was provided by the state, leaving co-operative educators to consider what part of education was to be undertaken by them. At the Fourteenth Annual Co-operative Congress, Arnold Toynbee proposed “education of the citizen” and B. Jones said “technical instruction in co-operation,” “the systematic teaching of the principles and practice of co-operation,” and “the making of perfect co-operators”.

After that congress, important steps in the organisation of educational committees and educational policies of Jones' plan were realized. The educational committee of the Co-operative Union and sections were established. Those committees played leading roles in co-operative education. Subjects included Co-operation, Industrial History, Citizenship, and Bookkeeping. At the end of 1890s, reforms in co-operative education were suggested. New educational works were provided in cooperation with the educational committee of the Union and Oxford University Extension Delegacy.

The debate concerning ‘Eternal Punishment’ developed in the 1830s, with most of the debates occurring between 1840 and 1914. Among the various theological problems with which churchmen struggled, ‘Eternal Punishment’ was a primary issue.

During the debates very many clergymen such as Edward Bouverie Pusey, Francis Paget, and Frederic William Farrar had written treatises on ‘Eternal Punishment’ or ‘Everlasting Punishment’.

While Charles Lutwidge Dodgson [Lewis Carroll] was a fellow of the University of Oxford, the discussions continued throughout Britain. He procured ammunition for the argument and participated by publishing his essay ‘Eternal Punishment’. In the paper, he examined the term ‘αἰών’, and he concluded the original Greek word αἰών did not connote ‘eternal’ or ‘everlasting’, but ‘limited time’.

In this essay, I shall outline the Eternal Punishment debate as it appears in some theological papers and tracts, and I intend to look at how to evaluate Dodgson’s opinion that ‘Eternal Punishment’ could not be signified as ‘eternal’.

The Japanese version of S. Smiles, Self-Help translated by Masanao Nakamura was the best seller in Meiji Period and made contribution to madernization of Japan. This important book was presented by a gentleman called H. W. Freeland as a small token of his best wishes for Nakamura's return journey from England. Although H. W. Freeland was one of the few Nakamura's English friends during his stay in London, there is little known about Freeland.
This article is to clarify who was H. W. Freeland and his publications. The information used here was collected mainly at the British Library during recent visits to England. What I found is as follows.
    Humphrey William Freeland (1814-1892)

This paper reconsiders the use of binaries which have long been established in the postwar study of British educational history ; for example, "Church of England vs. Unitarians", "voluntarism vs. the intervention of state power", and "working class people vs. the State." Whereas I recognize the importance of the use of these binaries, this method has overly influenced postwar educational theory, especially the last, represented by the works of Brian Simon. This study investigates the Local Examination, Simon's secret, utilizing historical and legal philosophical approaches as well as paying attention to urban citizens' ownership, community, and militant action. First, the historical features of voluntary education in Devonshire, focusing on local gentry Thomas Dyke Acland, founder of the Local Examination at Devonshire, are analyzed. Second, details of the Local Examination in the year 1857 itself are made clear. Third, the substantial involvement of Rev. Frederick Temple is analyzed. Temple was also a member of the Devonshire gentry who was one of Her Majesty's Inspectors as well as one of those liberal Oxford University professors belonging to Broad Church who led the nineteenth-century university extension. Finally, through a consideration of the historical meaning of the Local Examination and its later extension, some future tasks are proposed. As a result, this study makes clear that there existed a context for reform not only from outside as Simon insisted, but more importantly, also from within the establishment. In particular, it should be emphasized that toleration for the qualification of examination candidates, originating from university reform, to an open competition preceded the conscience clause in the Elementary Education Act of 1870. It also should be noted for further study that education by voluntarism permits "quasi-publicity" (Tatsuo Inoue).

It is the history of the famous champions or of the big match records in the bare-knuckle prize fighting that has been considered in the former studies of boxing history in the nineteenth century England. But, on the other hand, the style of glove-boxing had been formed in England since Broughton introduced 'mufflers' around the middle of eighteenth century. That was the beginning of 'sparring'. It was demonstrated for the upper class by ex-champions or ex-pugilists as a lesson to learn 'the noble art of self-defence'. And after 1820s public house, tavern and sporting house supplied the places for 'sparring', and it was also performed by students in some public schools and universities. The utilities and justices of boxing insisted through the 'sparring' were three following points. (1)The utility as a method of self-defence. (2)The utility as a healthy exercise. (3)The justice as one of the athletics to compete the arts of boxing, not to fight. Therefore the historical meanings of 'sparring' are not only to take boxing-gloves in advance, but also(1)to continue a justice of boxing for practical use till the beginning of this century, and(2)to introduce an insistence that boxing is a healthy exercise as a basis of the new justice of boxing, further(3)to take in advance an idea that was asserted to deny a factor of 'fighting' in the boxing match under the progress of modern boxing style.
