In this paper, illusion of "age = number" is questioned. This paper explored the "age" as self-awareness in context of Japanese language education. To do so, this paper mainly used two key concepts—"arbitrariness" and "interpretant". This paper pointed out two things in particular. Firstly, we cut off contiguous time course with no inevitable reason, and name the divided time "age". By talking about the "age", discourses bring a set of values. Secondly, the way we perceive age is affected by a set of values given to "age". This viewpoint of "age" can be applied to Japanese language education and bring a beneficial effect on it.
