Recently, production of computer animation become very active. In this paper, a system of producing animation of planar folds, “ORIGAMI”, is described. “ORIGAMI” is a kind of paper craft, in which the geometrical state of a sheet of paper is changed in a three dimensional space according to folding. For making pictures between given key frames according to “ORIGAMI” rules, simple linear interpolation doesn't produce correct intermediated pictures, because it is required that relations such as distance between vertices of folded paper had to be maintained in constant. For solving these problems, easy indication of coordinate values and standard data structure are needed. For describing the states of all kinds of planar folds in the object space, the standard 3-D data base composed of two kinds of indications, actions such as rotation and restriction, and geometrical coordinate values, is proposed. By proposed method of calculating intermediated pictures which satisfies given conditions, the designed system can create all kinds of “ORIGAMI” animation. This system is designed to be very compact to allow to use a personal computer. By these techniques, correct and reasonable intermediated pictures are made easily. As an example, the process of making a “swan” is illustrated. As an application of this system, the movement of a paper craft is simulated.
