A brief report on the tree breeding is given both historical view before 1954 and recent work done after 1955, in the selection of plus trees, establishment of seed orchards and progeny tests on the main tree species in Japan. In some species already reached to provide improved seed or cuttings for commercial planting.
Researches on tree genetics have been carrying on Larix, Abies and Picea species in northern district, and Cryptomeria, Chamaeciparis and Pinus species in Honshu district. Breeding for resistance to climatic, diseases or pests damages and wood quality have also been progressing. Many genetic informations are accumulating that can be contributed not only for genetic research but also providing improved materials for commercial planting.
