Recently, exhaust manifold of cars with conventional cast iron structure is partially replaced by welded light structure produced with thin plate and pipe of the ferritic stainless steel.
Exhaust manifold is generally used at high temepature, and under condition of repeating heat cycles.
On the cosideration of these characteristics, welding and its technique of ferritic stainless steel was investigated.
And the claims on ferritic stainless steel MIG welding wire were defined clearly.
These claims are shown as follows.
(1) Good ductility of deposited metal.
(2) High oxidation resistance at high temperature in air.
(3) Good bead appearances and bead shapes.
(4) Good welding operetatability.
On the consideration of these items, exclusive MIG wire for exhaust manifold and the exhaust parts of cars have been developed as model “WSR 42”. Model “WSR 42” MIG wire have been used by welding shop for exhaust manifold of Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. and these results of its application show the good weldability and welding operatability, and good qualities.
This paper shows that the characteristics of model “WSR 42” MIG wire have been created by investigation of wire composition, manufacturing condition and its application technique.
