In the present study, the relationship of the incidence of abnormal values in laboratory test and incidence of ECG abnormalities during exercise stress test to age was assessed to find critical age for exercise stress test before starting regular exercise for developing and maintaining health in middle-aged and elderly men. The subjects were 13,441 men aged 17 to 81 years. Of the 13,441 men, 3,301 performed exercise stress test. The results obtained were as follows:Physically active men over 50 years of age and physically inactive men over 35 years of age showed a significantly higher incidence of abnormal values in laboratory test than the physically active men under 34 years of age. However, only physically inactive men over 50 years of age showed a significantly higher incidence of ECG abnormalities than the physically active men under 34 years of age.
From these results, it is suggested that exercise stress test needs to be performed before starting regular exercise for developing and maintaining health in middle-aged and elderly men.
