In this paper, various characteristics of new self-ballasted mercury vapor lamps are described.
Self-ballasted mercury vapor lamps have been developed and used for several purposes because of their satisfactory color quality and facility in use. For general purposes, however, they are rarely used yet in Japan, because their rated life is rather short, their efficiency still low, and cost of production not so economical.
Improved types of self-ballasted lamp having are tube wattage of 50 to 55% ratio to total, with as long filament life as that of mercury vapor lamps (6000 hours or more) and with effective efficiency of 27 lumens per watt (for 500 watt lamps) have now been obtained, and their improved color quality is based mainly on the use of special phosphors.
With these advantages. the lamps of this type have special merits when compared economically with other lamps.
