The
Concours des colonnes nationale et départementales in 1800 is important in the architectural history in France as the first public competition during the
Consulat period (1799-1804). It is also around 1800 that the architectural journalism emerges in France (
Journal des arts, founded in 1799 and
Journal des bâtiments civils et des arts in 1800). In these occasions, the public opinion is openly manifested at the first time concerning the national monument. This study tries to make clear the relation between the public monument and the public opinion, and to describe the mutation from the style
révolutionnaire to the style
Empire.
