Montgomery gave birth to her first child, Chester Cameron Macdonald, on July 7, 1912. When she was expecting her second child in 1913, she hoped it would be a girl. However, it turned out to be a boy. To make matters worse, he was stillborn. Deeply depressed by the loss, she felt completely shattered.
