RbC
24 and CsC
24 were allowed to react with isoprene, 1, 3-butadiene or styrene. RbC
24 expanded slowly alongthe c-axis direction through contact with these unsaturated hydrocarbons. Monomer molecules are considered to beintroduced into the interlayer of RbC
24 and polymerized. In the case of CsC
24, isoprene was polymerized in a similarmanner as above, whereas the reactivity of 1, 3-butadiene and styrene was low. Thedifferent reactivities are explained on the basis of the activity of polymerization initiators. The degree of charge-transfer from alkali metal to graphite basalplane in the graphite intercalation compound (GIC) of Rb is higher than that of Cs, which results in the higher activityof RbC
24 as a polymerization initiator.
