Diabetes detection drive has been widely conducted for the past two years in Japan. In a part of the program diabetic case finding among the persons over 40 years of age was performed in Kyushu. In the first year, 1957, the employees of two industorial companies and of two offices were screened by us to detect diabetic cases. In the second year, 1958, the hypertensive individuals employed by the Yahata Iron-Works were examined to detect diabetes. In the present report the results of the diabetic cases among hypertensive subjects at the Yahata Iron-Works are mainly discussed.
The total number of employees at the Yahata Iron-Works was 37.043, and there were 1.519 hypertensive persons, who had been found by the hypertension detection drive performed in April, 1958. Among these hypertensive cases 873 cases volunteered to receive the examination for diabetes.
The screening tests consisted of urinalysis for glucose and determination of blood sugar 2-3 hours after the meal, and 308 of them showed positive results. These subjects with positive screening test were further received oral carbohydrate tolerance test to confirm the diagnosis, and 80 were found to have diabetes mellitus.
The incidence of diabetes among the hypertensive individuals was 9.2 per cent, which was much higher than the control group.
