Ever since the appearance of Mystical Animals(Shimpiteki hanju shugi), Iwano Homei's distinctive philosophy has been discussed exclusively in relation to Emerson's thought. Not to be overlooked, however, is Homei's adaptation of Shinto thought, shown, for example, in the work entitled the Great Cause of Ancient Shinto (Koshinto taigi). Homers epistemology proposes "nature as spirit" and his philosophy of life centers on an "individualistic patriotism." Shinto's contribution to these notions is the example of the individual void of spiritual or transcendental concepts. Homei's ideas on nature and nation develop by focusing on the theme of absolute self-expression. It is precisely in determining the essence of the individual self that Homei finds help in Shinto philosophy
