The relationship between the soil structure and the shrinkage behavior had been investigated experimentally for the series of the improvement of the subsoil of the poldered paddy fields in Koiima Bay. The author and his co-worker advocate the generalizied soil structure that is difined thermodynamically. Namely the Gel-Sol reversible model is prepared (
Fig. 1).
By the use of this model, some experimental results are as follows.
1) The fall of the shear strength by disturbance corespond to the increasing of the chemical potential (
dμ) of the soil-water system. From the experimental results for the volume change under hydrostatic pressure, the difference of the soil structures is clearly detected by the energy spectle diagram.
2) The amounts of, the shrinkage of the undisturbed soils are greater than that of the remould sample, that is mean the cotribution of the chemical potential difference (
dμ).
3) It is found that the difference of the soil structures is influence in the vertical and horisontal ratio of the shrinkage.
4) By coresponding to the liquid index, the amounts of the shrinkage of the soil are considerably influenced by the past consolidation of the soil, and so the liquid index is one of the good indexes to estimate the amounts of the shrinkage.
