This paper reports 2 erosion control projects under a concept to use natural power of rivers. Riverbank erosion is one of the most troubling problems in the rural area of Vietnam. JICA has been supporting their riverbank management using Japanese river engineering. In 2010, JICA conducted 2 riverbank protection works at Kim Ngoc Village and Thanh Xuyen Village in the central Vietnam. Main structure at former site was bamboo foot protection to prevent scour holes in front of the riverbank. Another was a masonry groin and a submerged guide wall to deflect flood flow away from the riverbank. In 4 years after construction, flood flow had changed to stop erosion and put deposit on the riverbanks. These structural specifications were designed to meet each local conditions, but these are referable for other sites. Finally, this paper shows a basic idea to shift dynamic equilibrium of flood flow and some lessons for sustainability, cost validity, repairability, people’s participation and engineer’s capacity building.
