      Apparent thermal properties and thremal conductivity of dry molds and furan resin bonded molds using silica, olivine, zircon and chromite sand were measured by the pouring method. The apparent thermal diffusivity, the apparent thermal conductivity and the apparent heat diffusivity of the dry sand molds obtained by pouring aluminum decreased with increasing void fraction of mold. These apparent thermal properties of the dry molds using silica, zircon and chromite sand obtained by pouring steel were much higher than those by aluminum. However, those of the dry olivine sand mold were not influenced by the pouring metal. The thermal conductivity decreased on heating up to about 600°C, but increased at higher temperatures. The rate of increase was much larger in the dry molds using silica, zircon and chromite sand beyond olivine sand mold and furan resin 1,000°C than that in the dry bonded molds. Furthermore, the solidification time of pure aluminum cylindrical castings coincided well with the values calculated using the obtained thermal properties.

      Apparent thermal properties and thermal conductivity of dry sand molds and furan resin bonded sand molds were obtained by pouring method using steel. Apparent thermal diffusivity, apparent thermal conductivity and apparent heat diffusivity of the dry sand molds of which bulk density were less than 1.5 g/cm3, were larger than those of the furan resin bonded sand molds for the same bulk density. The apparent thermal conductivity and the apparent heat diffusivity of the molds increased with the bulk density. The apparent thermal properties obtained with steel were much larger than those with aluminum, and were a little larger than those with cast iron. Furthermore, the thermal conductivity decreased on heating up to ahout 600°C. and then increased above this temperature. The rate of increase in the dry sand molds beyond 1,000°C was larger than that of the furan resin bonded sand molds.

      Apparent thermal properties and thermal conductivity of various sand molds were obtained by pouring method using cast iron. The apparent thermal properties (apparent thermal diffusivity, apparent thermal conductivity and apparent heat diffusivity) of dry sand molds, furan resin bonded sand molds and phenolic resin bonded sand molds increased in proportion to bulk density. These data corresponded closely to a straight line. The thermal conductivity of these molds took a minimum value between 400°C and 700°C, and increased with the bulk density. Therefore, the apparent thermal properties and thermal conductivity of the sand molds made under the constant condition increased with the sand diameter and the degree of roundness of sand particles, because of an increase of the bulk density. For the same bulk density, compared to the chilling power of the dry sand mold, furan resin bonded sand mold and phenolic resin bonded sand mold, that of the Vacuum Process mold was less, that of the green sand mold was the same and that of the CO2 mold was larger.

    This paper shows that the Da Foding shoulengyan jing 大仏頂首楞厳経 and the Huayan jing in eighty volumes 八十華厳 in the Sixi canon 思渓蔵, are formatted in a special form, i.e. 15 characters per line, since they are based on the separately block-printed editions published by the Huayan Society 華厳結社 at Longxing Temple. The Longxing Temple (later renamed Dazhong Xiangfu Temple

    祥符寺), the base of the Huayan Society in Hangzhou, is known to have published and disseminated the Huayan jing in eighty volumes from the first year of Chunhua 淳化 (990) to the third year of Xianping 咸平 (1000) and the Da Foding shoulengyan jing in the Dazhong Xiangfu

    祥符 period (1008-1016). Although little known until now, the sūtras published by the Huayan Society of Longxing Temple had a significant impact not only on separately block-printed editions in civil society but also on the Sixi canon.

      Numerical simulation was made on such casting parameters govering the solidification profiles as the level of meniscus, holding period in an intermittent casting operation, casting speed and mold diameter by the conventional forward explicit difference method considering two dimensional heat flow. If the meniscus level is low or the mold diameter is small, ring-like defects are easily formed on the internal surface of a pipe. This may be caused by prefered solidification at the meniscus where conduction heat loss to the upper solid shell or convection and radiation to the atmosphere play important roles. If the meniscus is higher than the mold height, defects are reduced but the solid shell is reheated near the melting point and then broken often. These predictions are experimentally confirmed.

    リン酸と硫酸の混合溶液に硫酸アルミニウムと硫酸亜鉛を添加した電解浴を用いて, チタンの陽極酸化 (電解着色) を火花発生電圧以上の電圧で行い, 硫酸アルミニウムのみを添加した電解浴から得られる皮膜より, より一層白色の皮膜を得た。
    この白色皮膜は, 火花放電をともないながら陽極酸化皮膜が生長する過程で, 熱加水分解されたアルミニウムおよび亜鉛の酸化物 (水和物) が熱融着することによって皮膜中に混入したものである。皮膜中のこれらの酸化、物は皮膜の深さ方向にほぼ同じ比率で分布していた。

      Apparent thermal conductivity independent of mold temperature and thermal conductivity as a function of mold temperature were determined from experimental data obtained by immersing a cylindrical ceramic mold into molten metal at constant temperature. The apparent thermal conductivity increased with amount of stucco and with the decrease in porosity. The apparent thermal conductivity increased in the order of fused silica particles, zircon sand, chamotte particles and fused alumina particles used as stucco. The apparent thermal conductivity obtained by immersing the sample into cast iron was a little larger than that obtained by immersing into aluminum. The thermal conductivity decreased with temperature when using zircon sand, chamotte particles and fused alumina particles as stucco. When using fused silica particles, the thermal conductivity did not change with temperature very much. With this method the apparent thermal conductivity and thermal conductivity as a function of temperature could be measured more rapidly than the pouring method, because the size of the sample was smaller and the temperature was measured only at the mold center and the metal-mold interface.

      A numerical technique for the quantitative prediction of shrinkage cavity is presented. In this technique the 3-dimensional heat balance equations are solved by Finite Difference Method independent of the formation of shrinkage cavity. Macroshrinkage is predicted in the region where bulk flow is easy and calculated in the elements where pressure head is minimum. The region where residual liquid flows in the dendrites is distinguished by a critical fraction solid. Microshrinkage forms where the fraction solid gradient is lower than a critical value in the assumed path of the interdendritic flow. Some numerical examples are analysed. The calculated shrinkage volumes agree well with the experimental ones in the steel plate castings and Al alloy casting. The computer cost of the proposed technique is not much more expensive than conventional technique such as the temperature gradient method. Therefore, it could be very useful for the evaluation of risers and the prediction of quantity of shrinkage in the castings.

      A direct simulation method has been developed for the prediction of porosity. The model considers both hydrogen redistribution in melt and solidification contraction. Simulated results were compared with experiments for castings of AC4C (sand mold) and AC8C (metallic mold) alloys. Both the simulation and experimental results showed that regions solidified slowly have a higher amount of porosity. It was found that it is difficult to predict porosity by the temperature gradient method or G⋅tf1/2 method, because these methods do not consider the effect of hydrogen. Further, it was also found that calculated and experimental secondary arm spacings show a rather good agreement by taking the time from liquidus temperature to eutectic temperature as the local solidification time.

      Thermal conductivity of sand molds was expressed as the sum of effective thermal conductivities due to conduction and radiation. Equations of thermal conductivity of dry silica sand molds and furan resin bonded sand molds were obtained. The effective thermal conductivity due to radiation increases above 1,000°C constituting about 50% of the thermal conductivity at 1,500°C. Although the thermal conductivity of dry silica sand molds increases with the melting temperature of poured metal by the increase of radiative heat flux, that of furan resin bonded chromite sand molds is not affected by poured metal because of the small radiative heat flux. The thermal conductivity obtained by the steady method is lower below 600°C than that of this work determined by the pouring method, and being higher above 800°C. This is because the radiative heat flux increases with the decrease of temperature gradient in sand molds. It is reasonable to use thermal conductivity obtained by the pouring method for computer simulation of castings, because the thermal gradient in the pouring method is the same as those in practice. A radiative heat transfer model in sand molds which coincides well with the experimental results was derived from Hamaker's theory.

    In order to study the biochemical events taking place in acordance with the erythroid cell differentiation, transfusion-induced polycythemic mice were injected with 6 CoU of partially purified urinary erythropoietin. After the indicated intervals, the polycythemic mice were sacrificed and enzyme activities related to heme synthesis were measured in these mice. Incorporation of 14C-glycine into globin fraction of the spleens was also measured in these polycythemic mice.
    ALA-synthetase activity, which had not been detectable in the spleen of the polycythemic mouse, started to appear on the 8th hour of erythropoietin injection. The activity reached to the maximum on the 52nd hour of the injection. ALA-dehydrase activity was demonstrable in the spleen of the polycythemic mouse probably because of the contamination of peripheral red blood cells. The enzyme activity started to increase on the 12th hour of the erythropoietin injection, and reached to the maximum on the 52nd hour. Heme-synthetase activity was not detectable in the spleen of the polycythemic mouse. It started to apear in the spleen on the 28th hour of the erythropoietin injection. The activity was maximum on the 52nd hour of the injection. Incorporation of 14C-glycine into globin was also not detectable in the spleen of the polycythemic mouse. The incorporattion was first observed on the 16th hour of the erythropoietin injection and reached the maximum on the 52nd hours.
    It was noted that appearance of the globin synthesis started earlier than that of the heme-synthesis after erythropoietin injection. From the above described sequential appearance of the enzymes of heme synthesis, it was speculated that the erythropoietin works on the hematopoietic stem cells to induce the synthesis of ALA synthetase. Whether this hormone is necessary for the further development of the erythroid cells or the substrate induction of the enzyme activities are responsible for the accomplishment of heme synthesis in the differentiated cells, are sill conjectural.

    Incidence of the acute exacerbation has been markedly high when the cases died of such complication as infection were excluded, in the 32 cases of chronic myelogenous leukemia who have been observed until their death in our clinic since 1937.
    Although the incidence was not higher among myleran treated cases as compared to the cases receiving other treatments, among 11 cases who had been treated with myleran and developed the acute exacerbation, 5 cases (45%) showed the signs of the acute exacerbation within 20 months after the establishment of the diagnosis of chronic myelogenous leukemia.
    This percentage was apparently higher than that observed in cases treated with X-irradiation or another chemicals. Therefore, a possibility that the myleran therapy could accelerate the development of the acute exacerbation was speculated from our present study.
    The acute exacerbation tended to occur more frequently in the period of myleran induced remission than in the relapsing phase of chronic myelogenous leukemia.
    Hematological changes suggesting the acute exacerbation occurred first in bone marrows followed by similar changes in peripheral blood. In one case of acute exacerbation, however, an increase in the number of blasts in peripheral blood preceded, and the bone marrow examination did not reveal any signs of acute exacerbation at that time.
    Prodromal signs of the acute exacerbation were arthralgia, bone pains, anemia, and thrombocytopenia. Increase in the serum CRP-titer was also noted in our cases suggesting its diagnostic significance.
