In this paper, the vertical distribution of freshwater planarians in the Yoshino-Kumano National Park (33°35' N. to 34°25' N. Lat. and 135°10' E. to 136°30' E. Long.), the Kinki Region in Honshû, is reported. The Omine-Daikô Mountains, the backbone of the southern half of the Kinki Region, are at the central part of the district (the highest peak, Mt. Misen or Mt. Bukkyo-gadake, is 1915 metres above sea level). The main river systems of the area surveyed are the Kinokawa (the Yoshino River), the Kumano (the Totsu River and the Kitayama River) and the Miyagawa. Surveys in the majority of the stations were made in August, 1954 (the Kitayama River) and in July, 1966 (the Yoshino River: the Survey of the Bottom Fauna in the Yoshino River System made by the members of the staff of the Zoological Institute, Faculty of Science, Nara Women's University under the leadership of Professor M. Tsuda). Several known localities of freshwater planarians are also shown in the map (Figure 1).
In the area surveyed, two species of freshwater planarians, Dugesia japonica ICHIKAWA et KAWAKATSU and Phagocata vivida (IJIMA et KABURAKI), were found. D. japonica was found in the stations lower than the altitude of about 700 metres. Ph. vivida was found in the cold-water stations within the altitude range from about 600 to 1500 metres. In the Kinki Region, this species has been recorded only in the northern side of the demarcation line drawn between the Suzuka Mountains and Mt. Odaigawara to Mt. Koya. The type of the vertical distribution in the area surveyed is shown as J-JV-V (J: D.japonica, V: Ph. vivida).
