There are two types of “chain” ownership of small daily townpapers in Japan; those which consist only of townpapers (type I), and those which are owned and/or controlled by prefectural papers (type II).
The author examines differences between these two types, through the closer look at the
Iwanichi-Group in
Iwate prefecture (type I), and the
Ishinomaki-Kahoku in
Miyagi prefecture (type II).
The study concludes that the type I group publishes a new “chain” townpaper only in the neighbouring area of its established territory, while the type II group locates a new townpaper more arbitrarily within the prefecture.
