In connection with fluvial phases, flushing is customarily carried out by water-flow or mechanical dredging of the sediment settled in sand basin. In case of flushing by water-flow, it is necessary to keep proper relations between flushing discharge and the cross section of sandflushing culvert to flush effectively, not to speak of the setting direction of the culvert.
Therefore, investigation was made on existng sand basins for hydraulic structures, and then, experimentally and theoretically, some ideas were obtained for the design of sand-flushing culvert as in the following.
After finding the proper relation between flushing discharge and the cross section of sandcarring box-culvert box-culvert having converging wedge-type transition at the end of settling basin to give shock waves, flushing can be brought to perfection under the condition of supercrtical flow (cf. Fig. 1, Eq.(5) and Eq.(8)).
In addition, it was clarified that perfect flushing in settling basin is possible, by the new devices, under comparatively low head with hydraulic jump in box-culvert (cf. Fig. 6).
