Japanese dressmaking (Saiho) was thought to be an important education in the Edo period's women's education. This education in comparison with non-sexed Terakoya or the general private institutions are discussed for their relationship, situation and contents, by documents of Japanese educational history and the Ema concerned in Japanese dressmaking. Moreover, as a prephased form of switch-over to public education in the Meiji period, its relationship to home education and realities of Japanese dressmaking education in Terakoya education were also examined.
It appears that dressmaking education has been consistent as being the center of women's education throughout the years.
