The revetment and the spur dike have played an important role in controlling flood water, protecting levee and bank, and maintaining alignment of main channel.
However, conventional revetments made by concrete blocks have given a bad influence on water environment including river ecosystems, because banks covered with the concrete material are not fit for the habitat of life in a river.
On the other hand, the spur dike tends to reconcile both functions of flood control and river environment.
We need to learn a design concept of hydraulic structures executed in old times for today' s river training works.
In the present paper, we investigate present conditions of revetments and spur dikess of the Tone River executed in old times. From this study, we attempt to clarify roles of these old revetments and spur dike, and draw a knowledge useful for today's hydraulic structures design.
