Since the beginning of the fiscal year of 1959, Atomic Fuel Corporation has been making various mining experiments to establish the most efficient mining method of the sedimentary uranium deposits which are important natural resources in Japan. As we took notice on the advantages of the high efficiency, low cost, and washing effect on the sedimentary uraniferous conglomerate of hydraulic mining, we made basic experiments on hydraulicking, transportation by trough and pipe at Resources Research Institute, Tokyo, making use of are samples of Ningyo-toge mine under guidance of and in co-operation with the institute from March to May 1961. Other than the above laboratory experiments we also made a field experiment on hydraulic mining at Ningyo-toge mine.
The results of these experiments were as follows
(1) Cutting can be made by jet water, the central pressure of which is 7.5kg/cm
2. If the pressure is more than 7.5kg/cm
2, the depth cut increases until the pressure decreases to 7.5kg/cm
2.
(2) In case of transportation by trough, an inclination more than 5° is necessary if the weight ratio of are to water is 1/4. There was almost no difference in transportation capacity even if other size of are particle was fed.
(3) In case of transportation by pipe the following relation was found if are less than 25mm diameter was transported, using 80.7mmφpipe.
h-
h0=
c/ν
0.325h:
h;head loss in horizontal pipe in case of are transportation, cmH
2O/m
h0: head loss in horizontal pipe in case of water transportation with the same velocityabove, cmH
2O/m
c: volume density, %ν: velocity, m/sec
(4) The washing effect of jet water on the ore was unsatisfactory contrary to the expectation because of the small experiment scale. Its solution is to be awaited in the future. But the washing effect during transportation by pipe was found to be pretty good. As there are many problems awaiting solution, we are expected to solve them by the field experiment on a practical scale at Ningyo-toge mine in the future.
