The method of Slichter (1955) for optimizing prospecting plans evaluates maximum profit ratio, which is of the value of ore discovered to the total cost of drill-holes distributed in uniform grid.
The present work is different from the previous paper of Slichter's. The object is to maximize “completeness of search”, one of the functions nominated by Slichter, instead of the profit ratio.
We make an attempt to extend the work of.the former paper in the following points:
(1) Areal distribution of drill-holes is optimized by using “theory of search”.
(2) It is proved that the optimum drill-hole grid is an equilateral triangle.
(3) When a drill-pierces a ore-body, the optimum drill-hole grid to evaluate extension of the orebody is decided.
(4) By calculating the cross-correlation function between two drilling columnar sections the distribution of depths of the holes is optimized.
