It was lto Hiroshi who expanded the horizons of the "utagatari" theory proposed by Masuda Katsumi and applied it to the age of the Manyoshu. Ito's theories have had tremendous infiuence on present-day Manyosyu studies, but they have also come under criticism from Masuda and others. This essay will attempt to show that the changes and developments in the "uta" from the seventh century to the eighth necessarily led to the development of a new oral art form, the "utagatari" and that moreover, the "utagatari" served as a basisfor the development of a new written form combining prose with the "uta" as can be found in Book 16 of the Manyoshu.
