The Social Welfare University Library Conference was inaugurated in 1983 by five university libraries aiming at professional education and research on social welfare. The purpose of establishment was to research and survey academic information on social welfare through cooperation of the affiliated libraries, to contribute to the improvement and development of social welfare research. The first Conference examined common problems and searched for solutions by exchanging information, and attempted joint possession of materials. The Conference shared the work of collecting of increasing amount of materials, edited and issued a comprehensive catalogue of periodicals, made a network of mutual use by issuing a common library card, so implementing mutual utilization. What this conference has implemented is now being executed by libraries all over Japan, because of the development of the projects of National Institute of Informatics and the advance of library systems, and because of change in libraries by utilization of IT. Hence the time has come to reestablish the task of the conference. Since 2000, the conference has been reconsidering concrete daily services including training of practitioners and has exchanged information to develop services of each library. It has been 24 years since the conference was inaugurated. 2, 900, 000 books are now available among all the affiliated libraries. In the future the conference is aiming to open to each community as well as to cooperate with other libraries, and hence be the center of the social welfare world.
