    Generally, tennis players tend to regard the volley as a shot which is technically difficult to learn and are consciously clueless about it. The lower the level is of a player in tennis, the more reluctant the player is to volley. In this research, therefore, we aimed at obtaining fundamental materials for coaching the volleying skill by investigating the consciousness and learning environment of student players toward the volley. The results are as follows.
    1) About half of the students lack confidence in their volleying skill and are consciously clueless about it.
    2) They tend to have an excessive regard for the racket work.
    3) Most of them think a sense ( in the meaning of inborn talent) is necessary to volley.
    4) They do not have enough experience in practicing the volley prior to the age of junior high school.
    5) College students, now, do not have enough chances to get appropriate advices to get rid of the reluctance to volley.
    It was suggested that the chances of getting advices from coaches decrease for student tennis players. But there seems to be a possibility for them to acquire volleying skill, getting rid of the reluctance to volley, by giving them appropriate advices based on the consideration described above. Since tennis players are not necessarily active in acquiring the volleying skill prior to the age of junior high school, it was suggested that making an effort to acquire the volleying skill in the middle of the golden age may be a factor for them to get rid of their reluctance to volley having confidence in their skill.

    The purpose of this study was to evaluate the activity of the shoulder muscles with various loads in the external rotational motion of the shoulder and to find the load in which only the inner muscles work mainly and the outer muscles don't work.

    [Purpose]The purpose of this study was to evaluate the activity of shoulder muscles in various shoulder positions in the external rotational motion.
    [Materials and methods]We examined the non-dominant side of shoulders of 8 adult males who did not have any shoulder disorder. We pasted surface electrodes for 7 outer muscles and stuck needle electrodes into 3 inner muscles of each subject. Each person performed isometric external rotation motion in various loads (0,3,9,15Nm) in 6 positions (60° internal rotation, neutral,30° external rotation with arm at side, and neutral,45° external rotation,90° external rotation with arm at 90° abduction position) with a Cybex-NORM770. We obtained electromyograms of each muscle. An electromyogram signal during a maximum manual muscle strength test (MMT) was selected as the normalizing value (100%) for each subject.
    Each activity (%MMT) was atatistically compared, using Scheffe's test. The statistical significance was set at 0.01.
    [Results and conclusion]During isometric external rotation motion, in internal rotation or arm at side position, the activities of the muscles were low and the activities of the inner muscles were higher than those of the outer muscles, so these positions might be appropriate for rotator cuff exercises in the early phase of rehabilitation. While, in the 90° external rotation with arm at 90° abduction positi on, which is similar to the cocking phase of throwing, the activities of all the muscles including the outer muscles were very high. So we must be careful when we do shoulder exercise in such like position not to overload the shoulder muscles.

    Practicing throwing of American football is effective in improving the throwing motion of baseball, thus, enhancing the pitching performance. It is however unclear how throwing of American football is related to that of baseball in terms of body control. For our investigation, we employed three subjects. Of these three subjects, one person has some experience with baseball and the other two are almost new to baseball ; they could only throw and catch a ball with others. We asked the subjects to practice throwing balls of American football and baseball for one month and collected data concerning their pitching forms and the speed of balls using a high speed video camera and a speed gun. We found as the result that only one student who has some experience with baseball improved his throwing form and increased the speed of the ball.

        The purpose of this study is to get the basic data for build up the systematic coaching method, to elucidate key coaching points related to movement in baseball hitting, to integrate and assemble these points, to elicit experiential knowledge from expert baseball coaches. Forty guidance books of baseball hitting were published in Japan which were transcribed onto text data, and divided into segments on the basis of meaning unit. We labeled “target parts (posture, axis, head and face, arm, viewpoint, trunk, hip, leg, object, equipment)” and “movement phase (stance, take back, top, step, approach, impact, follow-through and comprehensive)” to these text data. For this process, we conducted triangulation to improve reliability and validity. We extracted 3215 units and analyzed the number of each labels. The most frequent label was “equipment” and the next frequent label was “leg” and “arm” and “trunk”. These results suggest that key coaching points of baseball hitting shift from “leg” to “trunk” to “arm” in progress of movement phase. From the number of “target parts” in “movement phase” suggest that baseball hitting is coached for target both the comprehensive and partial, and it became clear what many baseball coaches were coaching who have common knowledge in the movement phase.

    Electromyographic muscle activities of the shoulder muscles during shoulder external rotation with reference to load magnitude were studied in 8 healthy male subjects without history of shoulder injuries. In addition, we discussed the relationship between rotator cuff muscles and superficial muscles. The subjects performed shoulder external rotation from 60°internal rotation to 45° external rotation at 20° of shoulder abduction and 20° of flexion. A Cybex dynamometer used to prescribe angle and velocity of the shoulder movement. At the same time, intramuscular wire electrodes were inserted into the supraspinous, infraspinous and teres minor muscles, and then surface electrodes were placed over the posterior deltoid and middle trapezius muscles. The load magnitude ranged 2-18 Nm and the angle velocity was set at 15 deg/sec. The rotator cuff muscles became significantly to be activated from 2 Nm (the supraspinous and infraspinous m.) and from 4-5 Nm (the teres minor m.) compared with the muscle activity during non-load. The superficial muscles became significantly to be activated from 4-7 Nm (the posterior deltoid m.) and from 3-6 Nm (the middle trapezius m.) compared with the muscle activity during non-load. Within the load range (18 Nm 46.8% MVC), %iEMG of the rotator cuff muscles was always larger than that of the superficial muscles. Therefore, we concluded that the contribution of the rotator cuff muscles was larger than that of the superficial muscles up to 3-4 Nm, and activities of the superficial muscles increased gradually from 3-4 Nm during shoulder external rotation.

    腰痛は,スポーツ選手においても発症しやすく,選手生命を脅かす可能性のある疾患である.立位体前屈時の脊柱運動および腰背部筋活動に腰痛有訴者の特徴が表れると報告されているが,スポーツ選手を対象とした研究は行われていない.そこで本研究では,バイオメカニクス的手法を用いて,大学硬式野球選手における腰痛有訴者および予備軍の特徴を捉えることを目的とした.腰痛有訴者(S群),腰痛予備軍(M群),健常者(N群)計 19名を対象とし,立位体前屈時の最大体前屈角度,腰椎屈曲角度,寛骨前傾角度,脊柱起立筋( L2,L5)の筋活動量を算出した.結果, Sおよび M群は N群に比べて最大体前屈角度が小さく,腰椎骨盤リズムに生じた変化が影響していたと推察される.加えて,体前屈角度が 60-100度に変化する際, S群および M群の L2において本来の筋収縮が行われず,筋活動量が小さかった.本研究の結果は,スポーツ現場における選手や指導者へ向けた情報提供となり,腰痛有訴者および予備軍の新たな客観的評価法の提案につながる.
