Objectives: This study was carried out to clarify and categorize Yogo teacher employment of touch by type and role from the perspective of Yogo teachers
Methods: We distributed a questionnaire-type survey to Yogo teachers at 750 elementary, junior high, and high schools located in Aichi, Gifu, Mie, and Shizuoka between July and August 2011. A total of 380 responses were collected (response rate: 50.7%). Questionnaire items were school classification, Yogo teacher age, employment/non-employment of touch by occasion, and employment/non-employment of touch by occasion when speaking with students. We applied cross tabulation, Chi-squared test, and Games-Howell method for analysis.
Results: 1) Responses indicated that 90% of touch was employed “when students are crying” and “when they are afraid,” and 80% of touch was employed “when students complain of symptoms.” 2) Employment of touch by Yogo teachers was classified into four categories by role; “empathic touch,” “touch as a tool,” “touch as treatment,” and “educational touch.” 3) Yogo teachers employed “empathic touch” the most; however, the older the students become, the less the Yogo teachers employed touch. These results indicated that Yogo teachers employed “empathic touch” to a greater extent than they did “touch as treatment.” They also indicated that the employment of touch decreased along with the growth of each student.
Conclusion: Yogo teachers employed “empathic touch” the most and “touch as treatment” the least. “Touch as treatment” by Yogo teachers is affected by the clarification of effect; therefore, it is necessary for us to collect a greater amount of data and conduct a more detailed analysis.
