In this comment, I intend to make a research on studies on Chikamatsu and his works in the course of the formation of academic literary study in Japan. Therefore it is my purpose to trace historically the method of study on this great playwright. Moreover I want to try to explain the mutual relation between criticism and study on Chikamatsu. Chikamatsu revived in the twentieth of Meiji Era. He was revived deeply connecting the subjective and nationalistic movement in those days, and as its typical phenomenon. This shows us a typical way to recognize classical literature in Japan. The studies on Chikamatsu started with background of this enormous spread of Chikamatsu's literary works, and they had, at early part of the thirtieth of Meiji Era, first but so intense dispute about how to study Chikamatsu. Tokyo University Group (so-called university school) advocated that we should study Chikamatsu fundamentally and philologically. But this advocation was not always dominating method of study even in inside of this group, or rather we could say that an attempt to return literature itself was often made. Thus by tracing these various situatious, we can know the reflection of the afflictedness of academism in Japan from Meiji Era to Taisho Era.
