    Kanamycin (以下, KMと略す) を眼感染症に対して使用した報告は, 既に大石, 杉浦らによつてなされ, その優れた効果がみとめられている。
    私達は今回, 一眼手術の術前無菌法処置の目的にKM眼軟膏が適するかどうかを検討した。結膜嚢は体外環境にあるおめ, 健常と見える者においても, 細菌は毎常のように存在する。大部分は非起炎性ものであるが, 時に起炎性のものもある。もし外傷で眼球壁が破られた場合, これらの菌が眼球内に侵入することが考えられる。眼外で非起炎性の菌も, 眼内に入ると病原性菌として振舞う場合がある。眼組織の中でも硝子体, 水晶体は血管を欠き, 感染に対して抵抗性に乏しく, 細菌にとつて好適な培地とさえなるものである。眼球内に感染が起つた場合, その眼の予後は絶望的であることが多い。眼手術, 特に侵襲が眼内に及ぶ場合 (内眼手術), 眼内に細菌を導入しないことはきわめて重要なことである。このために術前に結膜嚢を無菌の状態にしておくことが要求される。この処置を私達は内眼手術準備としての結膜嚢無菌法 (以下, 単に無菌法と呼ぶ) と称している。
    以下に無菌法に用いたKM軟膏の効果を報告し, また数例の外眼部感染症にも試みた結果を併せて述べる。

    Gravimeter records of the Chilean earthquake of May 22, 1960 are obtained in Kyoto. These records are read at 2-minutes intervals. About 1500 numerical data thus obtained are high-pass filtered and Fourier analysed. Power spectra thus obtained are shown in Figs. 2-5. The 53.4 and 35.8min. oscillations of the earth seem to be detected by the present analysis. The 53.4min. gravity variation is about 0.57μ gal in amplitude and attains its negative maximum at the origin time of the earthquake, i. e., 19th. 11m., May 22, 1960. The corresponding displacement amplitude is estimated by Figs. 6 and 7 to be 0.28cm.

    This paper is a short historical review of studies for investigating crustal deformations car ried out in Kyoto University during the period from 1909 to 1965. Main topics are (i) Obser vations of Earth tides with tiltmeters and the “Shida number”, (ii) A plan to detect free oscillations of the Earth proposed by Dr. Shida and observations of tidal strains with extensometers, and (iii) Crustal deformations associated with earthquakes. Among others, the Shida's pro posal in 1922 to observe the free oscillations of the Earth should be evaluated more.

    Secular change of latitude was compared with those of some geophysical phenomena. It was found that there existed an intimate correlation between the secular displacement of the earth's mean pole and the change of height of mean sea levels of the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean.
    On the other hand, the Chandlerian amplitude and period showed a parallel change with the amplitude of tidal variation of latitude.
    In both cases a geoid pulsation may be postulated.

    Continuous observations of the earth tides with Verbaandert-Melchior pendulums at Akagane Observation Station was commenced in 1967. Hourly reading values of the records have been sent every three months to the International Centre of the Earth Tides at the Royal Observatory of Belgium. On the other hand, the data have beenn analyzed successively by means of Lecolazet's method in our observatory.
    Tidal factors of four main waves were determined by the analysis, but they were very peculiar values in comparison with that of global values of 0.60.8. As shown in Table II, γ of the diurnal waves were larger than 1.0, on the contrary, that of the semidiurnal waves were too small. After detailed examinations it was considered to be affected mainly by the oceanic tides, because the observation station was located merely 50 kilometers distant from the pacific coast.
    Attraction (A) of oceanic waters, the flexure (B) of the earth's crust due to the water and the potential variation (C) due to the earth's flexure were calculated using co-tidal maps under the following assumptions.
    For the first approximation, the Boussinesq's formula for solving the deformation of the earth due to surface load was applied. Then, the total oceanic term was expressed as, A+B+C =(1+υ+ε)A. The value of v increases proportional to the depth, and it iss expressed as the hyperbolic function,
    υ=C2/γ+C1,
    where r denotes angle distance in degree between the observation station and the point mass. C1 and C2 depend on underground structure and distribution of the rigidity.
    In this paper, the values of C1, C2 and ε are adopted as 12.6, 3.0 and 0.5 respectively, which were determined by Dr. Nishimura.
    Consequently, the total oceanic term was expressed as follows,
    A+B+C=(1+12.6/γ+3.0-0.5)·A.
    The corrected values of ?A for M2 wave became larger than that of previous values as shown in Table IV. The first approximation shows good result, and further investigations for local indirect effect of oceanic tides are now continued.

    Secular changes of the ground tilts and strains observed at Yura, Wakayama Prefecture, since the beginning of observations in 1951 are reviewed. Anomalous tilts which have been considered to be related with two large earthquakes, the 1952 Yoshino and 1960 Odaigahara earthquakes, are especially conspicuous in the whole period of the observations. However, there still remains a possibility that these changes might contain instrumental drift to some degree. A change of the mode of the tilts and strains is seen in the period from 1973 to 1974, which might be caused either by the occurrence of two remarkable earthquakes (M=5.9 and 5.8) about 25 km east of Yura, or coincident with an anomalous crustal deformation over a wide area observed at several other stations in Japan.

    In previous reports, the author performed the observations of tidal strain of the earth's surface in some or several directions by means of the extensometers at Osakayama observatory, Kishu mine and Matsushiro observatory, and obtained the tide-constituent (M2, O1 etc.) of the observed strains.
    According to the results, the phase lags of M2- constituent are nearly zero, and the upper and lower limit of them are 43° and 29° respectively. That is the coefficients of cos 2t-term are the positive values in all the azimuths, and the coefficients of sin 2t-term are far smaller than the ones of cos 2t-term, where t is an hourly angle of the hypothetical heavenly body at the observatories. And so, it is most probable that the secondary effect (due to the oceanic tide) is far smaller than the primary effect (due to the astronomical tide), and also the Love's number h is more than about five times of Shida's number l.
    Now, the precise observations of the tidal strains in the prime vertical and in the meridional directions have been performed once more with heighly sensitive extensometers of which sensitivities are 0.37×10-8/mm and 0.57×10-8/mm respectively at Osakayama.
    From the present observations, the value of h-3l, relating to areal strain is obtained as follow
    h-3l= 0.448 ± 0.003
    And the amplitude ratio of O1-costituent vs. M2-constituent are obtained as follows
    (O1/M2)φφ=0.85 in the prime vertical direction,
    and (O1/M2)θθ = 0.48 in the meridional direction.
    If the secondary effect is as large as the primary effect, the ratio of amplitude, (O1/M2)φφ and (O1/M2)θθ should be almost equal to each other. But, on the contrary, both ratios are widely different each other. Hence we may neglect the secondary effect against the primary effect in the following process to calculate the tidal constants. The propriety of the result is shown by the comparison of the strains due to the Chile tsunami at Kishu and Osakayama. And the amplitude of M2-costituent of the eθθcomponent vs. one of the eφφ-component is obtained as follow
    (eθθ/eφφ)M2 =1.69,
    where eθθ and eφφ are the strain components in meridional and in the prime vertical directions respectively. From these results, the ratios of h and l are calculated as follows h =11.1l from (O1/M2)φφand h =10.6l from (eθθ/eφφ)M2
    And from the value of h-3l and the ratio (O1/M2)φφ the value of constant h and l are, calculated at 0.618 and 0.056 respectively.

    Following the way in a previous paper, Fourier analysis of gravimeter records of the Chilean earthquake of May 22 in 1960 obtained in Kyoto is extended to larger wave numbers. The period range covered by the present study is from 66.4min. to 8.4min. Spectral peaks corresponding to the earth's spheroidal oscillations of n=2 to 12 are seen in the results shown in Fig. 1. Observed oscillation periods seem to be a little longer than those predicted by Pekeris and others for the Gutenberg model. This may be due to a low velocity zone being nearer to the earth surface under Japan.

    In order to select the most suitable method of harmonic analysis for tidal variation of gravity, and to check the methodical difference in the tidal factor-G, the three methods of analysis, the Darwin's, Doodson's and Lecolazet's, were applied to the data obtained with the Askania gravimeter at two stations, Kyoto and Matsushiro.
    Comparing the results in three cases with each other, the obtained values of G show the maximum difference of 10 percent. From the present treatment, it is provisionally concluded that the Doodson's method is preferable in case of monotonous drift and the Lecolazet's is suitable for the case of irregular drift.

    The lunar tidal effect on the vertical has been detected from the international latitude observations with the visual zenith telescope at Mizusawa in the years 1935-1955. The semi-diurnal terms or M2 tide-constituents aredψ=0".0091 cos (2t_??_-3°), 1+k-l=1.18 for 1935-1947, dψ=0".0123 cos (2t_??_-52°), 1+k-l=1.60 for 1947-1955, dψ=0".0102 cos (2t_??_-44°), 1+k-1=1.32 for 1935-1955.The combination of Love numbers L or 1+k-l appears, therefore, to be more significant than that in the years 1900-1935 (L=0.38 by E. Nishimura and L=0.64 by E.I. Evtuschenko). The simultaneous latitude observations with the floating zenith telescope has been analysed to investigate the lunar tidal effect on the vertical in the years 1943-1955. The results obtained from the FZT seem to coincide almost exactly with those by the VZT as follows:dψ=0".0102 cos (2t_??_-23°), 1+k-l=1.32 with the FZT, dψ=0".0103 cos (2t_??_-15°), 1+k-l=1.34 with the VZT. Therefore no systematic difference of the lunar tidal effect between different instruments has been found for the sufficiently long interval. The fact suggested by K. Hosoyama that the mode of time variation of the L-values appears to correlate just negatively with that of the Chandlerian motion has been investigated fully through the whole period 1900-1955. It would be, however, desirable to determine more precisely the recent variation of the Chandlerian motion and examine the intrisic relation between the Love numbers k and 1 together with the simultaneous observations of tidal strain of the earth's surface with the extensometer which determine the Love num-bers h and 1. It seems probable that there may be exist any negative correlation between the Chandlerian motion and the lunar tidal effect on the vertical deduced from the latitude observations.
