In this paper, an indirect method of continuously measuring blood pressure is proposed. This method is based on the well-known relationship between arterial pressure and pulse wave velocity, that is, the arterial pressure can be estimated from the change of the pressure waveform.
In arteries, especially distal arteries such as the femoral artery, two obvious peaks are observed in the pressure waveforms. The systole causes the first one, and reflected waves at multiple sites in the arterial system cause the other one called the dicrotic wave. Taking the time interval between two peaks (Ta) and the pulse wave velocity into consideration, the most effective reflecting site is at or near the iliac artery, and Ta is the time the pulse wave takes to propagate between the aortic valve and this reflecting site.
It is well known that Young's modulus for a blood vessel increases in proportion to the arterial pressure and that this increase increases the pulse wave velocity. Therefore, Ta is inversely proportional to the arterial pressure, and so the change of arterial pressure can be calculated from the change of Ta.
Ta is determined from the autocorrelation function of the pressure waveform which is transcutaneously detected at the dorsal artery. In order to establish the relation between Ta and the arterial pressure, Ta is calibrated in corresponding pressure readings by the usual cuff method.
From results, we can see that the change of Ta is inversely proportional to the change of diastolic pressure. Therefore, the change of diastolic pressure can be estimated from the change of Ta within the measurement accuracy of about 5mmHg.

This paper is an effort to investigate the Osaka cotton trade to determine the relationship between the political authority of the Tokugawa bakufu and the commercial activities of the cotton merchants. The establishment of trade associations and their transformations over time are examined with a view to discovering where the dynamics originated. Were the merchants dominated by the economic policies of the bakufu, or did bakufu policy tend to follow the lead of the merchants and of commercial activity in general? Did the role of the merchant associations change over time? If so, what were the nature of these changes? Through this analsis, the dominant role of the Tokugawa bakufu is challenged. Commercial activity was not in fact controlled in an effective fashion. Government remained dependent upon the realities of the commercial sector of society in dealing with the merchants. The process of economic institutional change continued despite efforts by the bakufu to impede it. The final section of this paper presents some ideas on "Institutionalization and Change" which have been advanced by S. N. Eisenstadt. These ideas have been extremely useful to the author in his analysis and are presented to give a background to his analytical approach.

The Choshu clan took a very active part in driving forward the anti-Shogunate movement on the eve of the Meiji Restoration. Shimonoseki, the main port of the clan, was looked upon as a center for the anti-foreigner's movement in Japan. This article aims to make clear the economic aspects of the clan which made possible this kind of active political movement. It is well known that Shimonoseki was a center for inter-clan trade in the southwestern part of Japan since the Tempo period. Nevertheless, the economic significance of trade between Shimonoseki and Kitamae has been overlooked by researchers. However the importance of this trade should be reconsidered, particulary from the financial frame of reference, inorder to understand better the economic causes of her political activity. It can not over emphasised that the clan's active participation in Shimonoseki-Kitamae trade was the main source of money income which in turn made it possible for the clan to activate an anti-Shougunate movement on the eve of the Meiji Restoration.
