I have examined 147 lepers in a new psychological test, which was desined by Prof. E. Awaji. This test consists of 50 qestions to be answered by either Yes or No. From the answers we can estimate the mental state of the examinee as an index-num-ber. In this way I have reached the folloing conclusions.
1) There is no difference between the lepers in a large asylum and a small one.
2) The mental state of lepers shows a slight tendency to introspection but it remains within the normal curve.
3) The tubercular lepers shows a little more tendency to introspection than the nervous types.
4) The mild cases show a greater tendency in this direction than the serious ones.
5) It seems that the mental state of lepers changes with their age, just as is the case with normal people.
6) The lepers who were attacked by the disease before 10 years of age show a greater, tendency to introspection than the others: and those who were attacked above 20 years of age show a greater tendency to outward than the others.
7) During the two years following their discovery of their illness, patients show a greater tendency toward introspection, but this tendency shows less with the years, and about 20th year the tendency shows the most high value to outward.
8) The mental state of patients who enter the hospital within this two years period show a pronounced tendency to introspection, but those who has been in the hospital over 5 years show a greater tendency to outward.
9) The blind lepers show the greatest tendency to introspection.
