    We studied on the change of physical state such as order-disorder transition at high temperature by considering its electronic characteristics. Consequently, Ti-49.5at%Al was transformed from order to disorder at 770K.

    The ordering and phase separation in the Fe–Al alloy have been investigated on the basis of the pairwise interaction model. The tendencies toward the ordering and phase separation are proved to be caused by the effect of interactions between the 3rd neighboring or farther atoms in addition to the 1st and 2nd neighboring ones. In the Fe–Al alloy on the iron-rich side, the three kinds of phase separation into α and B2, α and DO3, and B2 and DO3 are demonstrated to occur besides the ordering of the B2 and DO3 types. The equilibrium phase diagram of the Fe–Al system proposed by the present calculation agrees well with previous experimental results.

    Microstructure formation and stress evolution in a microstructure is simulated based on coupling equations for the phase, temperature and stress/strain. Grain growth processes from some nuclei of the precipitated phase are simulated under three different conditions. Assuming volumetric dilatation in the transformation to the precipitated phase, tensile and compressive stresses are generated in the interfacial region, and the distribution changes as the grain grows. The elasto-plastic model gives a residual stress distribution in the material, which is not able to be obtained using the elastic calculation. A grain-growth model with four regularly placed nuclei demonstrates creation of residual stress zones along the grain boundaries. Another model with randomly distributed nuclei also gives a residual stress distribution along the grain boundaries, in which dependence of the stress on the size and shape are observed.

    Aging behavior of Al-base alloys containing 0.7∼2.7wt% Li is studied by measuring specific heat vs temperature (S-T) curves during heating of the alloys which have been quenched from 540°C and then aged at various temperatures ranging from room temperature to 300°C for various times. The S-T curves are interpreted by comparing the shapes of the curves of other age-hardening alloys, and an ordering alloy. It is proposed that the precipitation in Al–Li alloys takes place in a five-stage process; solid solution→disordered G. P. zones→ordered G. P. zones→δ″ (short range ordered Al3Li)→δ′ (long range ordered Al3Li)→δ(AlLi), during isothermal aging at temperatures below ∼90°C, where, δ″ is a fine particle assumed to be a one- or two-dimensional superlattice of Al3Li in which only the short range order is developed. The symbol δ′ is restricted to describe only the large particle of a three-dimensional superlattice of Al3Li. Experimental determinations are made for the stable and metastable solid solubility curves of the δ phase and G. P. zones. A “pseudo-critical temperature” (Tc) of δ″ and the critical temperature (Tc) of δ′ are obtained and plotted against the Li content of the alloys. Here, the “pseudo-critical temperature” is the temperature above which the δ″ is considerably destroyed during heating of the alloys.
    The δ″ and δ′ phases are already present in the as-quenched state from 540°C, in the case of alloys containing more than 1.7wt% Li.

    It is well known that the metrical unit which is called mora plays an important role in Japanese.
    The aim of this study is therefore (i) to argue that the syllable template previously proposed is inadequate to treat Japanese phonology in its right perspective, (ii) to make a new proposal on CV-skeleta and syllable template in Japanese phonology, and (iii) to show how the proposal developed here can handle phonological issues such as accent movement, vowel contraction, compensatory lengthening, etc., in a principled way.

    Kohsai Udagawa (1821-1887) was one of scientists in Japan. He lived from the last days of the Tokugawa shogunate to the early days of the Meiji era. Present paper is about interpretation of his manuscript concerning Niépceotype albumen wet plate photography, named “Potokarahii” and the results of experiment on the process. It was supposed that the old document was a translation from a Dutch technical book. It contains preparation and image formation in a silver iodide-albumen photosensitive layer on a glass plate. It consists of following items; introduction, cleaning of glass plate, preparation and coating of iodide-albumen solution, sensitization, light exposure, development, fixing, washing and drying. Interpretation was a little difficult, because the manuscript was composed of classical Chinese characters, “hentai-kana”, classical Japanese character, and old Dutch technical terms and units. Sensitometric exposure of plates was operated in the way of time scale, because a light wedge could not be contact with the wet surface of plates. ISO photographic speed calculated from the results of 5500 K sensitometry was equivalent to 4×10-4, although exposure index was about ten times larger in taking picture as is mentioned in the later part of the abstract. Development time was shortened by treatment with saturated gallic acid solution before light exposure. Solarization of image appeared in the higher exposure region without the treatment. In addition to them, it was desired to add silver nitrate solution into a gallic acid developer to obtain a negative image having proper density on the plate. Spectral response was observed in the region of 330 nm-500 nm with maximum sensitivity at 400 nm. Exposure index of the plate was 4×10-3 in taking picture, owing to the sensitivity to ultra violet and blue rays. It took 10-15 minutes at F numbers of 8-11 to take portrait or still life in the open air. Some consideration was made for the reason why “Potokarahii” was not published in those days.
