    Single phase samples of a cobaltite BaCo6O11 and its Fe-substituted derivatives BaFexCo6-xO11, which have

    hexagonal ferrite structures, were successfully synthesized by a high-pressure and high-temperature method. BaCo6O11 was found to be a ferromagnetic metal. Mixed valent Co3.4+ cations at the octahedral B(1) and B(2) sites contribute to the metallic conduction, whereas Co3+ cations at the trigonal-bipyramidal B(3) site give local magnetic moments, which order ferromagnetically below the Curie temperature of 17 K. The Fe substitution largely increases the magnetic transition temperature and changes the ground state to a ferrimagnetic semiconductor owing to the introduction of localized Fe3+ cations at the B(1) and B(2) sites.

    pyocins (R1, R2, R3, and R4) produced by different Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains were compared with respect to their structure and action mechanism. It is known that these bacteriocins have structures similar to contractile bacteriophage tails and serologically cross-react with each other, but they are distinguished according to difference in range of sensitive strains. All these pyocins were shown to arrest the synthesis of protein and nucleic acid in sensitive cells, as previously reported for pyocin R1. Action of pyocin R3 was shown to require calcium ion. Although antiserum prepared against one pyocin neutralized other
    R
    -
    type
    pyocins as well as the homologous pyocin, some differences in antigen specificity were found between pyocin R1 and pyocin R2 or R3 by antibody blocking assays. Electron microscopic observation of pyocin particles treated with the antiserum pre-absorbed with heterologous pyocin revealed that specific antigens were located on the distal portion of the fibers. Comparison of protein composition showed these pyocins to be composed of essentially similar subunit proteins but a subunit protein supposed to be a main constituent of the fiber was different in its molecular weight among these pyocins. These results suggest that the main structural difference of these pyocins is to be found in the fibers.

    modification of molybdenite was found as the first occurrence in Japan by means of X-ray powder diffraction method. Three examples are described here: (1) products of fumarolic activity on the Satsuma-Iwo-jima, southern Kyushu, (2) samples in high temperature hydrothermal wolframite-bearing quartz veins of the Yamate (Shitekurayama) mine, Okayama Prefecture, and (3) those in contact metasomatic molybdenum deposits of the Okawame mine, Iwate Prefecture. All the specimens examined are admixture of the 3R and 2H1 polytypes with varying ratios.

    Superplastic elongation depends heavily on a value of strain-rate sensitivity index m. The value of m is obtained by various methods, using specimens of various shapes for uniaxial tensile tests. A special technique is required to measure the m-value. In this study,

    specimens having no smoothed region were employed instead of ordinary smoothed specimens. A series of tests for various aluminum alloy sheets and titanium alloy bars were carried out at elevated temperatures to evaluate superplasticity. It was difficult to measure the m-value using a single
    R
    -
    type
    specimen. However, the obtained value using more than three specimens was in fairly good agreement with the value of smoothed specimen. Furthermore, the total elongation of the gauge length of 6 mm at the bottom of the R-part could replace that of the smoothed test-pieces. The obtained value was less scattered in comparison with the value of the smoothed specimens. Consequently,

    specimen can be useful for simple evaluation of superplasticity.

    Omphacite replacing after relic edenitic pargasite has been found in an omphacite–bearing jadeitite block of the Itoigawa–Omi area in the Hida–Gaien belt. Omphacite occurs sporadically as fine–grained aggregate reaching a few cm in length in a jadeite–albite matrix, and sometimes contains edenitic pargasite as a core. The edenitic pargasite is chemically and optically homogeneous and does not show direct contact with jadeite and albite. An irregular shaped omphacite–diopside mixed area occurs near edenitic pargasite in a coarse omphacite aggregate. The texture suggests that the breakdown of edenitic pargasite was triggered by the addition of a hydrothermal fluid, from which jadeite and albite were precipitated later, passing through diopside and omphacite by the reaction:

     

     

    At the periphery of pseudomorphic omphacite, a hydrothermal fluid removed the breakdown components of the reaction other than omphacite.

     New in–situ LA–ICP–MS U–Pb dating revealed that zircons in edenitic pargasite yield apparent age up to ~ 590 Ma, with mean ages of 560 ± 16 Ma, interpreted as the minimum age of a precursor rock. A zircon age of 519 ± 21 Ma from jadeitite without omphacite corresponds to a timing of crystallization of omphacite, jadeite, and albite. The studied jadeitite is a typical

    R
    type
    jadeitite, and the nearly total replacement from a precursor rock to the omphacite–bearing jadeitite has been attributed to hydrothermal activity at Middle Cambrian times.

    Superplastic characteristics of a 7475 aluminum alloy have been evaluated by the
    R
    -
    type
    specimen method. The
    R

    type
    specimen has no ordinary gauge part with a uniform cross section. The method has been proposed recently to solve the problems on the conventional tensile test using an ordinary specimen. As a result, it is found that the
    R
    -
    type
    specimen method enables to evaluate the extremely high superplastic elongation of the commercial 7475 alloy using a furnace with a common length. The elongation of the
    R
    -
    type
    specimen decreases with an increase in the radius of the R-part below a certain value, while it increases over that value. Better reproducibility of the elongation for the
    R
    -
    type
    specimen is obtained in Region II than that for the ordinary specimen. Moreover, the elongation of the ordinary specimen can be estimated quantitatively from the peak value of the strain distribution of the
    R
    -
    type
    specimen after fracture, using the suitable shape of the specimen and the adequate distance between gauge marks.

    In order to evaluate the basic characteristics of superplastic materials, an
    R

    specimen has been proposed, which has no ordinary gauge part of a uniform cross section.
    First, the fundamental problems of a conventional evaluation method have been pointed out. Then, the superplastic characteristics of a Zn-Al eutectoid superplastic alloy have been examined to investigate the possibility of the new evaluation method using the
    R
    -
    type
    specimen.
    As a result, it is found that the
    R
    -
    type
    specimen has the excellent possibility. In particular, the extremely high elongation can be estimated from a peak value of strain distribution after fracture. Moreover, true stress versus true strain rate relation and m-value in a wide range of strain rate can be derived from the results for a pair of

    type
    specimens.

    BaFe6-xMnxO11 (x=2.0, 3.0 and 3.5) and SrFe3Mn3O11 were prepared by high-pressure method, and their crystal structures and physical properties were investigated. The materials crystallize in
    R
    -
    type
    hexagonal ferrite structure, in which Fe3+ ions mainly occupy B(2) and B(3) sites, while Mn ions mainly occupy B(1) site. The compounds show Collinear Gorter-type ferrimagnetic structure, and saturation magnetization and Curie temperature decrease with increasing x. They also show Arrhenius-type semiconducting behaviors.

    Cast Mg85Y9Zn6 has an 18

    LPSO structure. However, Mg85Y9Zn6 recovered after being subjected to a loading pressure of 7 GPa at 973 K shows a fine dual-phase structure composed of a face-centered cubic (fcc) structure showing a superlattice (D03), as well as a hexagonal close-packed structure (hcp:2H). The D03/hcp structure transformed to 18
    R
    -
    type
    LPSO during heating at ambient pressure. In this research, the transformation process from the D03/hcp structure to 18
    R
    -
    type
    LPSO structure was discussed by means of in situ XRD and first-principles calculation. At first, lattice volume of 2H increased with an increase in the temperature, because of the Zn and Y emitted from the D03 phase into the 2H lattice. After the volume expansion of 2H lattice, the structure collapsed due to insert of random stacking faults (SFs). Then, a formation of 18
    R
    -
    type
    LPSO structure occurred. Based on a first-principles calculation for pure Mg, volume expansion of the 2H lattice causes the transformation to an 18R structure. Furthermore, the results of free energy calculations for the hcp and fcc structures in the Mg–Y–Zn ternary system show that the segregation of Y and Zn atoms on SFs occurs by the Suzuki effect. These segregated Y and Zn atoms in SF layers, which have a local fcc structure, create a synergy between the stacking and chemical modulations. Present result insists that the volume increase of 2H lattice takes place first, and then the transformation from the hcp structure to 18R stacking occurs.

    In order to get information on the disordering process and stability of non-ferrous bainites, crystallographic features of the 9
    R
    type
    bainite in Ag-26.6wt%Zn alloy have been examined more precisely than previous works mainly by means of the selected micro-area electron diffraction method in high voltage electron microscopy. 003 and 006 reflections from the 9R bainite are verified to be intrinsic, this suggesting some segregation of Zn atoms on every third layers parallel to the basal plane in the 9R bainite. Additional reflections corresponding to a fcc structure are observed in the bainites formed by ageing over 20 sec, suggesting that the 9R bainite finally decomposes into a fcc and another, possibly hexagonal phase, although its martensitic features are maintained in the beginning of ageing.
    Crystallographic relations between the 9R bainite and matrix phases are analysed by using more precise data. The obtained orientation relationship, (001)B5° from (110)β1 and [1\bar10]B⁄⁄[\bar11\bar1]β1, and the habit plane, nearly (\bar928)β1, are consistent with those in previous works on the 9R bainites in Ag–Zn and Cu–Zn alloys. Crystallographic features are also calculated by the phenomenological theory developed for martensitic transformations from bcc to long period stacking order structures, and a good agreement is obtained between the calculations and observations.

    pyocins have been reported which are almost identical with one another in their morphology and subunit composition, though distinct in receptor-binding specificity. We isolated fibers from pyocin R2, R3, and R4 by essentially the same procedure as used in our previous isolation of pyocin R1 fiber with unimpaired receptor-binding ability. All the isolated fibers including RI fiber were indistinguishable from one another, in terms of electron microscopic observation and subunit composition analysis by SDS gel electrophoresis. They consisted mainly of Subunit No. 2 (Mw 71, 000) and No. 9 (31, 000) proteins. Although Subunit No. 9 protein in every fiber was susceptible to trypsin and afforded a fragment with the same molecular weight (about 19, 000) detectable in the SDS gel, Subunit No. 2 protein was cleaved with trypsin only after the fiber had been treated with an organomercurial, 4-(p-sulfophenylazo)-2-mercuriphenol. The cleavage of Subunit No. 2 protein proceeded to give several fragments with molecular weights ranging from 64, 000 to 34, 000, and the fragmentation patterns were electrophoretically distinct at least among R1 fiber, R3 fiber, and others (R2 and R4 fibers). The results indicate that Subunit No. 2 proteins of these fibers are different from one another in the structure surrounding trypsin-susceptible peptide bonds. Immunological investigations with anti-R1 fiber antibodies provided some additional information on the difference among
    R
    -
    type
    pyocins at the fiber level.

    Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium is a common cause of non-typhoid salmonellosis in humans. Since 2006, an increase in the human infections caused by U302 phage type in Slovakia has been documented and, from 2006 to 2011, a total of 291 U302 human strains were isolated. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing demonstrated that these strains had a high overall antimicrobial resistance and 244 (83.8%) of the tested strains were multidrug-resistant (MDR). The most prevalent resistance was to ampicillin, streptomycin, sulfisoxazole, and tetracycline (
    R
    -
    type
    ASSuT), which was verified in 87 (29.9%) strains. The annual rate of this resistance type varies, but the largest number of these strains were identified in 2009 and 2010. The classical pentaresistance phenotype (
    R
    -
    type
    ACSSuT), characteristic of the DT104 phage type, was found only in 40 (13.7%) U302 strains. These results suggested that although the prevalence of DT104 phage type has decreased, ASSuT as well as ACSSuT resistance markers continue to circulate. Therefore, continual surveillance of the occurrence of these and similar MDR phage types is necessary.

    In January 1961, JNR was granted a patent for “transmission shaft with thrust measuring unit”. This patent was applied for the port main shaft of the Tsugaru-maru, a newly-constructed ferry-boat plying between Aomori and Hakodate. This is the first successful application in the world of a thrustmeter in large ships. This thrustmeter has been so designed as to be able to withstand safely up to 0.1 million repetitions of the severest change imaginable. The strength and rigidity to bending and torsion of this unit have been found more than equal to those of other common intermediate shafts. The thrustmeter proved sensitive enough as planned; and the stability of zero base and sensitivity was found extremely good. The measurements of thrust and torque of Tsugaru-maru in the official speed test between mile-posts showed that the efficiency of the ship's controllable pitch propeller was higher than expected.

    Biological characters of S-type of L.acidophilus were compared with those of

    Standard strains of S-type and
    R
    -
    type
    were always stable on the standard medium of S. H. I. plate of PH. 5.0. On stained smears, S-type organism were seen to be moderate in size and rod shaped appearing either in single or in a chain of ?-3 bacilli. On the contrary,
    R
    -
    type
    bacilli were appeared to be long steady chains.
    Homogeneous saline suspension was easily obtained from the S-type, but with the colony of
    R
    -
    type
    it was necessary to use glass-beads for grinding and keeping still for a while to obtain a turbid supernatant.
    Behaviors of S-type were different from those of
    R
    -
    type
    , likewise the case of enteric bacteria, in the following reactions : salt sensitivity, Millon's reaction, heavy metal ion reaction, trypaflavin sensitivity, and growth in the broth.
    However no appreciable difference was observed between S-type and
    R
    -
    type
    in the carbohydrate fermentation, final pH, reduction of nitrate, catalase reaction, bile resistance and in the reaction to the heating at 60°C for 30 minutes.
    In general, S-type was stable in the acid side and unstable in the alkaline. In the alkaline side, it showed SR-or
    R
    -
    type
    appearance though there was some difference in the manner by the strain used and the kind of acids used to adjust the pH of the medium.
    R
    -
    type
    is unstable in the acid side, but stable in the alkaline side.
    Relationship between S-type and
    R
    -
    type
    was observed on the plate added with immune serum. No remarkable change was observed in the appearance of colony between the plate added with homologous immune serum and that with heterologous immune serum except that both
    R

    type
    and S-type showed a tendency to shift to SR-type on the plate added with heterologous immune serum.
    From the above findings, it was concluded that S-type is quite different from
    R
    -
    type
    in various biological characters as is the case with enteric bacteria, furthermore, the designation of of type S- or R-should be made under the standard conditions stated already.

These characters are not seen in S-type. It is the purpose of this paper to study the cell-wall components of S-type and

    to see the difference between them, if any.
    Following results were obtained.
    1. The polysaccharides obtained from the cell wall of S-type and
    R

    type
    showed the similar sedimentation curves with 2 peaks each other in the ultra centrifugation analysis.
    2. Employing the polysaccharides prepared by the author, no difference of antigenity was found between S-type and
    R
    -
    type
    by the agar-gel-diffusion technic of Ouchterlony, in which only a single precipitation line was found.
    3. Both in S-type and
    R
    -
    type
    , the monosaccharides of the cell wall were proved to be galactose, mannose, xylose, rhamnose and glucosamine. However the amount of rhammose of
    R
    -
    type
    seemed to be much smaller than that of S-type.
    As reviewed in the previous paper, it was possible to find several differences in the biological characters between S-Type and
    R
    -
    type
    of L. acidophilus. Besides, it was difficult to find any difference in the cell-wall components between the two types even by using highly purified polysaccharides in the precipitation reaction and paperchromatographic analysis. Minor difference in rhamnose concentration between them, however, leads us to suspect that some change may occur in the composition of some carbohydrate of the cell wall when S-type mutates to
    R
    -
    type
    .

    Pyocin R, a bacteriocin produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain P15, has a complex structure, resembling a bacteriophage tail, and is composed of more than 400 molecules with about 20 different types of subunits. The rates of synthesis of these subunits at a late stage of mitomycin C-induced production were measured. It was found that the subunit proteins were synthesized in proportion to their contents in mature pyocin particles.
    The rates of integration of labelled proteins into pyocin particles were determined by pulse-chase experiments. Most subunits were integrated with apparent first-order kinetics with half-life times of 4 to 14min, and the integration of total structural proteins into pyocin particles had an average half-life of 8min. Two subunits, however, behaved differently, and showed lag times of about 6min before being detected in pyocin particles. The results are discussed in relation to the events occurring in the morphogenesis of pyocin R.
    Revised data on the subunit composition of pyocin Rare presented and its characteristics discussed.

    of Z 29 designated by this author were isolated from the strains of Lactobacillus acidophilus and their immunological characters were investigated by precipitation reaction both with so-called carbohydrate-antigen of Lancefield and with ordinary agglutination reaction.
    As the result of these experiments, following points were clarified :
    1. In precipitation reaction, no particular difference was observed whether the serum and the antigen are in homologous relation or in heterologous one.
    Howerer very slight lowering of the titre was observed in the reaction between S-type antigen and

    In resistance spot welding of steel and aluminum alloy, the thickness of the intermetallic compound (IMC) is known to be dominant. In order to form the intermetallic compound thinly, the heteromorphic electrodes in which the shape of the electrode is changed the top and bottom was developed. In this study, Reverse

    are combined, the joint strength improves with welding current value increases. The electrode with the tip curvature of R25 on the steel side, the R25, the Flat electrode and the Reverse

    electrode on the Al alloy side were respectively placed. As a result, in the combination of R25 / Reverse

    , the joint strength was improved with welding current value increases. It then based on previous research, the relationship between the thickness of IMC edge and CTS was investigated. In addition, in order to study the relationship between the joint strength and the IMC in detail, the fracture form near the IMC edge was observed. From the above, it was suggested that the fracture mode near the IMC edge may greatly influence the CTS.

    1. The subunit composition of highly purified pvocin R was reinvestigated by SDS (sodium dodecyl sulfate)-disc electrophoresis by the method of Laemmli (2). At least 22 bands were detected in this way. The molecular weights of these subunits were determined. The localizations of most of these subunits either in the sheath or other portions were determined. The numbers of molecules of each subunit present in one particle of pvocin R were estimated.
    2. The precipitability of each subunit by the anti-pyocin R serum was studied by two methods; immunoprecipitation of alkali-dissociated subunits of purified pvocin R and immunoprecipitation of subunit proteins synthesized in vivo.
